SYNOPSIS
 Schermers’ tavern had been damaged by some
irresponsible people
 To show sympathy, Mrs.Hansen asked students
to sign a card. Mrs.Hansen dissappointed with
the students are there was only one signature
(Richard’s)
 Richard asked the card from Mrs.Hansen as he
wanted to give the card to Hannah’s family
personally on his way home
 Abner and Harry wanted to have a fight with
Richard but he fought back
 Richard went to Hannah’s house to give the card
THEMES
 COURAGEOUS
- Richard shows his integrity and courage by signing a card
of sympathy

 RIGHT WAY PATRIOTISM


- Richard still retains his own language, culture and
tradition if he is not originated from that country.

 PEER PRESSURE
- When Herbie was stared at by Abner, he was afraid to sign
the card for Hannah. They are afraid of being bullied and
lost the friendship. They want to fit in with the other people
so that they are accepted.

- Pale, slender and tall with blonde hair,
resembles his mother

 Example: Richard was brave to sign the
card even though none of his
classmates wanted to sign on the card
 HANNAH SCHERMERS
- Richard classmates: beautiful, with
blue eyes and blonde hairs
- Sensitive and easily hurt
 Example: Someone crawls
“DirtyHun” all over Hannah’s book
cover after school, she cries in the
hallway
 MRS. HANSEN
- Richard’s English Teacher
- Thoughtful, kind, fair and determined
 Example: she buys a card for hannah
when some vandals vandalise her
parents’ tavern. She tries to get her
students to sign it to express regret
for what has happened

- Rude, Mean, Narrow- minded and Bully


 Example: The Troublemakers gang up against
Hannah and her family and warn all the student
not to sign the card
SETTING
 PLACE
1) The School - Richard sided with Hannah who had been
bullied by others because she was a German

2) The Schermer’s - Hannah’s house was vandalised with


awful words because they were Germans

3) The Oak Tree - Richard always climbed to the top of the


oak tree to look at the train passed by when he felt sad. Once
was when Hannah talked to him harshly after he handed her
the card
MORAL VALUES
 We must not bully others
-Abner and Harry liked to bully others so that they followed
them. They stopped others from signing the card

 We should not be prejudiced


-Hannah and her family were the victims of the war they were
originated from Germany

 We should courageous
-When under peer pressure, we should not compromise like
Richard’s classmates who were afraid to sign the card
