DEFINITION OF VOLTAGE PROBLEM (IEEE Std)

STANDARD QUALITY
Voltage Sag/Dip

Definition:
 IEEE Std 1159 : a voltage sag/dip as
a variation in the rms voltage of
duration greater than ½ a cycle and
less than 1 minute with a retained
voltage of between 10 % and 90 % of
nominal.

Impacts of Voltage Dips

 Impacts:
 Depend on severity (magnitude & duration)

Sectors Impacts
Industry o Quality of products
o equipment/plant shut down
o recovery proces

Residential/business o Lights blink,

o Motors speed fluctuate,
o Computers /Automated equipment
stops/reboots

Utility/PLN o Unhappy customers,

o malfunction and failure of system components
and control systems

26
Ferroresonant Transformer
 A.k.a. Constant voltage
transformer (CVT),
 transformer operating in
the saturation region of the
B-H curve.
 mitigates to 30 % dips
 Simple, relatively
maintenance free
 very effective for loads up
to 25 kVA.
 not suitable for loads with
high inrush currents such as
direct-on-line motors
Static Var Compensator (SVC)
 Variable MVAR compensators
 Fast acting
 Capacity up to hundreds MVAR
Dinamic Voltage Restorer (DVR)
 Work by adding the ‘missing’
voltage
 Fast Acting
 Including: harmonic mitigation,
fault current limiter, p.f.
Correction, and transients
reduction.
Uninteruptible Power Supply (UPS)

 Mitigate voltage dips

by supplying the load
using stored energy
 Fast
 Capability depends on
battery
Flywheel & Motor-Generator

 energy stored in the

inertia of a rotating
flywheel to mitigate
voltage sags.
