KINESIOLOGY 2 CREDIT H. 3
RESISTANCES

 By the physical therapist

 By the patients own body weight

 By the weights and pulley circuits

 Springs

 Water

 Malleable substances
PHYSICAL THERAPIST

 Applied Manually
 Hand is placed on direct surface of skin

 Smooth controlled pressure

 Physiotherapist must stand in line of movement

so that legs and body weight can be used
 Resistance varies according to muscle power
variations in the full range of motion
PATIENTS OWN BODY WEIGHT

 Needs careful instruction

 Is convenient for therapist

 Disadvantage is that it can not be measured

 I.e exercises against gravity

 Push ups

 Straight leg raise

WEIGHTS

 Direct application of weight

 Medicine ball, dumbbells, sandbags

 Number of units lifted can be measured

 Attachment and method of lifting must be

comfortable and efficient
PROGRESSIVE RESISTANCE EXERCISE

 Used to restore muscle power and volume after

injury (De Lorme 1945)
 This is a strength training method in which the
overload is constantly increased to facilitate
adaptation.
PROGRESSIVE RESISTANCE EXERCISE

PRE is the use of progressively increasing

resistance to muscular contraction to build the
strength, endurance, and size of skeletal
muscles.
 The body adapts to exercise and needs to be
constantly challenged in order to continue to
grow and change.
 This method of promoting muscular
development had been well known and used by
the professional muscle builders from a very
long time
 In this technique usually metal weights are applied
to the part of the body.
 This application is done either by means of a bar
bell held in the hand like that of e.g. dumbell or by
means of a De Lorme boot or some similar device.
 The poundage of resistance is determined by the
RM for a given number or repetition.
 Muscle could work either statically or dynamically
APPLICATION OF TECHNIQUE
 The amount of resistance and method of
application of the resistance depends upon the
condition and type of injury or disease of the
patient.
 Instruction should be precise and effects
should be well supervised.
 There are many ways to achieve progressive
resistance
 Increase the weight you're lifting. Do the same
number of reps and sets each week, but
increase your weight.
APPLICATION OF TECHNIQUE
 Increase the number of reps. Use the same
weight for each workout, but increase the reps
each week.
 Increase the number of sets each time you
workout.
 Shorten the rest between the sets.
 Lengthen the time under tension - or how long
your muscle fibers are under stress. Use the
same weight and reps, but slow down the
exercise. For example, 1 count to lift the weight,
3 counts to lower the weight.
DE LORME AND WATKINS
10 lifts with ½ 10 RM
10 lifts with ¾ 10 RM
10 lifts with 10 RM
30 lifts 4 times weekly.
Progress to 10 RM once weekly.
 Endurance program is on use of relatively low
resistance and high repetition regime
OTHER OPTIONS

 Resistance by weight and pulley circuit:

 Resistance by springs and other elastic
substances:
 Resistance by malleable substances:

 Resistance by water:
PROGRESSION

Progression as the power of the muscle increases

the resistance applied should must be
increased. This can be done by the following
means
 Increase the poundage or weight

 Increase leverage of the resisting force

 Alteration in the speed of movement

 Increase duration of the exercise

EFFECTS
 Increase muscle power, endurance and volume
 PRE build up muscle power so can be used for
weak muscle for the restoration of balance in
muscle power.
 Increase blood supply to working muscles
 Provide material for the repair and hypertrophy
of the muscles.
 General rise in blood pressure.
 Heat production.
