- DRINKING INTOXICANT
 - The word for intoxicant used in the Qur-an is
Khamr(wine) which is derived from khamara
meaning to cover or veil something. In the
Noble Qur'an the word Khamr has been used for
alcoholic drinks. Khamr signifies any fermented
juice such as
What is the meaning of Alcohol?

Islamic definition: Alcohol is any substance that intoxicates,

whatever it may be. The Proof for this is the Prophet’s saying,
“Every intoxicant is alcohol and every alcohol is forbidden.”
(Recorded by Muslim on the authority of ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar-
may Allaah be pleased with him and his father).
‘Umar (May Allaah be pleased with him) said:

‫الخمرما خامر العقل‬

“Khamr is anything that puts a curtain over one’s
intellect.”

What is the Ruling, concerning drinking of alcohol?

‫اب َواۡلَز َۡل ُم ِر ۡجس‬ ۡ ۡ ۡ ۡ ٰۤ ٰۤ
ُ ‫ص‬ َ ‫س ُر َواۡلَن‬ ِ ‫ياَيُّ َها الَّ ِذ ۡي َن ا َمنُ ۡوا اِنَّ َما ال َخ ۡم ُر َوال َم ۡي‬
‫﴾ ِانَّ َما يُ ِر ۡي ُد الش َّۡيط ُن‬5:90﴿‫اجت َ ِنبُ ۡو ُه لَعَلَّك ُۡم ت ُ ۡف ِل ُح ۡو َن‬
ۡ َ‫ع َم ِل الش َّۡيط ِن ف‬ َ ‫ِم ۡن‬
‫ص َّدك ُۡم ع َۡن‬
ُ َ‫س ِر َوي‬ ِ ‫ضا ٓ َء ِفى ۡال َخ ۡم ِر َو ۡال َم ۡي‬ َ ‫َاوةَ َو ۡالبَ ۡغ‬َ ‫ا َ ۡن يُّ ۡو ِق َع بَ ۡينَ ُك ُم ۡالعَد‬
﴾5:91﴿ ‫صلو ِ​ة ۚ فَ َه ۡل ا َ ۡنـت ُ ۡم ُّم ۡنت َ ُه ۡو َن‬ َّ ‫ّللا َوع َِن ال‬ ِ ٰ ‫ِذ ۡك ِر‬
“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on]
stone alters [to other than God], and divining arrows are but defilement from the
work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.” (5:90) Shaytan wants only
to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcohol drinks) and
gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from As-Salah
(the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?” Surah Al-Maidah: 90-91
 The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said, “Allaah has cursed wine, its drinker, its server, its seller,
its buyer, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who
conveys it, and the one to whom it is conveyed.” (Recorded by Abu
Dawud and Ibn Majah on the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar –
may Allaah be pleased with him and his father).

َ ُ‫سأَلُونَ َك َماذَا يُن ِفق‬
‫ون قُ ِل ا ْلعَ ْف َو َكذَ ِل َك‬ ْ َ‫َو ِإثْ ُم ُه َمآ أ َ ْكبَ ُر ِمن نَّ ْف ِع ِه َما َوي‬
﴾٢١٩﴿ ‫ون‬ َ ‫ت لَعَلَّ ُك ْم تَتَفَ َّك ُر‬
ِ ‫ّللاُ لَ ُك ُم اآليَا‬
‫يُب ِيه ُن ه‬

“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: “In both of them there is a great
sin and (some) means of benefit for the mankind, but the sin of them is greater than
their benefit”. And they ask you what they ought to spend (for the sake of Allah)? Say:
“That which is beyond your needs”. Thus Allah explains to you the Verses, so that you
may ponder (over the wisdom contained in them). Surah
 O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a
state of janabah, except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a
journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean
earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.
