2007 Al Hillah bombings

March 6, 2007 “Two suicide bombers wearing explosive vests joined
the huge crowds surging into the city for a traditional

Al Hillah, Iraq religious festival” (Terrorpedia). The attackers used

the festival as a time to strike, as there would be many

suicide bombing.
The Islamic State of The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is who has
claimed responsibility for all of the attacks that took

Iraq and the Levant place on that date (Al Jazeera).

Rebuilding Fear The main reason behind this attack was to rebuild fear
in Iraqi citizens. The ISIL was falling off of the list of
most feared terrorist groups, so a main motivation for
this attack was simply to show they were still there.
"With today's attack, ISIL is sending the message that
it can still cause and inflict a lot of pain," Abdel-Hamid
said. This shows that the main goal of the attack was
to send a message about themselves, not a message
to others about their life choices, like most terrorist
acts.
200 Dead This attack left around 200 people dead, most of
whom were Shia Muslims. Most of these muslims
were Iraqi, however, there were also Indians injured
according to Al Jazeera. This attack achieved its goal,
as it did spike fear back into Iraqi citizens of this
organization.
After the Attack Unfortunately, not much has changed after this attack
in terms of preventing more (New York Times). It has
been followed by at least three more similar
bombings. This is terrible that more innocent people
continue to die. There needs to be better measures to
ensure the safety of Iraq’s peaceful citizens. They do
not have the ability to protect themselves from
bombings such as these and need more help and
intervention from the government.
