Comparison of Kani’s Method with

SAP 2000® result for a double storeyed

building frame
To analyze a building modeled in SAP 2000®
To compare the results obtained from SAP
2000® with that of Kani’s method for a
representative frame
To compare stress shown by the SAP 2000®
in beams and columns with manual
calculation
SAP 2000 ®

Single Interface

SAP 2000® is the most commonly

used software for analysis and
design of buildings

Uses finite element method for

analysis
Kani’s method
Out of all the manual methods Kani’s Method and
Matrix Analysis Method are easy to use and can be
completed within a short period of time

Useful for the analysis of multistorey frames

PLAN OF THE BUILDING
Regular one
Chosen regular one so as to select representative frame
in 2-D analysis in Kani’s method.
The plan of the building is drawn in AutoCAD®

Biaxial Stresses On Column
At point C total stress is equals to summation of
axial stress, bending stress about Y and bending
stress about X. Mathematically it can be expressed as

At point D total stress is equals to summation of

axial stress, bending stress about Y and bending
stress about X. Mathematically it can be expressed
as
At point A total stress is equals to summation of
axial stress, bending stress about Y and bending stress
about X. Mathematically it can be expressed as

At point B total stress is equals to summation of

axial stress, bending stress about Y and bending stress
about X. Mathematically it can be expressed as
The value of moment on column (C1)
about Y- axis is taken from the SAP 2000®
results
Moment about Y-axis can only be
determined through another 2-D analysis
for cross directional frame, using Kani’s
method.
It is time consuming and not at all
practical.
COMPARISON FOR COLUMN
 When final moment of manual calculation is
compared with final moment of SAP 2000® then there
is a maximum percentage difference of 19.11% and
minimum percentage difference of
5.22%
When stresses of manual calculation is compared
with stresses of SAP 2000® then there is a maximum
percentage difference of 14.4% and minimum
percentage difference of 3.08%.
When final moment of manual calculation is
compared with final moment of SAP 2000® then there is
a maximum percentage difference of 15.98% and
minimum percentage difference of
6.49%
When stresses of manual calculation is compared with
stresses of SAP 2000® then there is a maximum
percentage difference of 9.09% and minimum
percentage difference of 2.74%.
The SAP 2000® value is on higher side
 Kani’s method is a tedious process
2-D analysis using Kani’s method does
not give accurate results for
asymmetrical building with staircase.
The manual calculation for vertical load
columns is not accurate as in SAP 2000®
 In a framed structure column load is not only
due to vertical load as in cases of a slab simply
supported over columns, but also due to
reactions arising out of distribution of bending
moments
The load due to moment distribution will arise
from the cross direction as well.
 In manual calculations done in this project,
takes account of only vertical load.
 Discrepancies in calculations of stress in
columns is observed which is not there in case of
SAP 2000®calculations
Even for a simple 3-D building frame it is
impossible and impractical to use Slope
deflection, Moment Distribution and Kani’s
Method in 3-D.
