Components of Successful
Community-based Tourism
• In developing community-based tourism projects, the three
groups should be in agreement with regard to their duties,
scope, and limitation.
• The community must be amenable with the project as tourism
may be a direct impact- which may be negative or positive- on
their way of living. Thus the community members must first be
consulted on any tourism-related projects for implementation.
• One of the important mark of a successful implemented
community based tourism project is that the member of the
community are tapped as a source of manpower for the project.
• The government plays a vital role in community-based tourism.
They can act as intermediaries between the community and the
private sector. The local as well and national law apply to the
transaction. The government is vital in the development of
community-based tourism as they also entice potential investors
to invest in the country.
• The private sector provides the influx of investment, as well as
the capacity building for the community.

Tourism Projects

The community should have a participative consultation before the project is to be

implemented. That way, the community understands the process they will undergo
and the changes that would take place. This will allow the community to weigh in
the positive and negative impacts that the project would bring. Concerns and
possible issues with the community are addressed expediently by all parties.

would in turn create a buy in so that there would be a sense of ownership by the
