If you knew you were

going to die tomorrow,

what would you do
today?
JOHN 13: 1-17
Luke 22:24

“A dispute also arose among them

as to which of them was considered
to be greatest.”
Matthew 20:26-27

“Whoever wants to become great

among you must be your
servant, and whoever wants to be
first must be your slave.”
Pride - Virtue

Humility - Weakness
In what ways are we
like the disciples?
When all people are
committed first to
themselves,
relationships crumble.
What did Jesus’
response?

An opportunity to teach one

of the greatest lessons.
Verse 3:

“Jesus knew that the Father

had put all things under his
power, and that he had come
from God and was returning to
God.”
Verse 1:

“It was just before the Passover

Festival. Jesus knew that the hour
had come for him to leave this
world and go to the Father. Having
loved his own who were in the
world, he loved them to the end.”
He loved them to perfection. ♥
He loved them to uttermost. ♥
He loved them with total fullness of love. ♥
Christ love and humility are inseparable.

1 Cor. 13:5

1 Cor. 13

Humility of love – proves it and makes it

visible.
How could anyone reject
that kind of love?

Judas did.
Verse 2:

“The evening meal was in

progress, and the devil had
already prompted Judas, the son
of Simon Iscariot, to betray
Jesus.”
The more men hated Jesus
and desired to hurt Him,
the more it seemed He
manifested love to them.
Verse 4-5:

“So he got up from the meal, took

off his outer clothing, and wrapped
a towel around his waist. After that,
he poured water into a basin and
began to wash his disciples’
feet, drying them with the towel that
was wrapped around him.”
The Majestic, Glorious God of
the universe comes to the earth.

Then He kneels on the ground to

wash the feet of the sinful men.
Love that is real
is love expressed in
actions,
not just words.
Verses 6-8:

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,

“Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I

am doing, but later you will understand.”

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my

feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you
have no part with me.”
God is saying,

“Peter, unless you allow me to

wash you in a spiritual way,
you are not clean and you
have no part with me.”
Verse 10:

“Those who have had a bath

need only to wash their feet; their
whole body is clean. And you are
clean, though not every one of
you.”
There’s a difference between
Bath and Foot-washing.

Bath – once

Foot-washing – many times

Washing every now and then
in the form of:

Correction
Forgiveness
Restoration
Verse 11:

“For he knew who was going to

betray him, and that was why
he said not every one was
clean.”
Verse 13-15:

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly

so, for that is what I am.

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have

washed your feet, you also should wash one
another’s feet.

I have set you an example that you should do

as I have done for you.”
He is not saying, “Do the
same thing I have
done”.

He is saying, “Behave in
the same manner as I
have behaved.”

Jesus’ humility is the

real lesson.
Result = Loving Service

Doing menial and humiliating tasks for the glory of Jesus Christ.

Practical Examples:
♥ Approach people who have had friction with us and be
reconciled
♥ Continue to serve even without recognition
♥ Church/ Fellowship officers serving as drivers, or cleaners of the
sanctuary
♥ Taking the initiative to greet newcomers
♥ Willingness to be corrected, and to say “sorry”
♥ Loving the unlovable
True or False?

The nearer you get to God

the further you must be from
men.
Verse 16-17:

“Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater

than his master, nor is a messenger greater
than the one who sent him.
Now that you know these things, you will
be blessed if you do them.”
Develop a
Servant’s
Heart ♥
Memory Verse:

John 13:14

“Now that I, your Lord and

Teacher, have washed your
feet, you also should wash one
another’s feet.”
