WHAT IS SKIMMING??
Read quickly to get the general idea of what an article about and
to become familiar with the most important idea with in it .
WHY SKIM?
• To skim, move rapidly through the pages. You will not read every word; you
will pay special attention to graphics, headings, boldface and italic type,
indenting, bulleted and numbered lists.
• Use skimming to overview your textbook chapters or to review for a test. Use
skimming to decide if you need to read something at all, for example during
the preliminary research for a paper. Skimming can tell you enough about the
general idea and tone of the material, as well as its gross similarity or
difference from other sources, to know if you need to read it at all.
READ VERTICALLY AS WELL AS
HORIZONTALLY
Before you start skimming, ask yourself what you want to get from
the book or article you want to skimm. Think of two or three terms
that describe what you want to know, and as you skim, keep an eye
out for those two or three terms.
Aimlessly skimming with no particular purpose can cause drowsiness,
and eventually, sleep.
