RUSSIAN REVOLUTION IMPACT

• Serves as Crimea’s background, the seed

 January 1918, Crimea has been influenced by Red Movement


 1 May 1918 Crimea was influenced Central Powers
(Germany).
 6 January 1919, Crimea began to become part of Allied
Powers
 26 May 1919 become part of
RUSSIAN REVOLUTION IMPACT

 October 1919 occupied by Makhno Anarchist − which align


with Bolsheviks

 White movement came back to “reclaim” Crimea until 1920


Makhno Anarchists rised again in Crimea at 27 November
1920

 January 1921 marks the conflict & disagreement between


Makhno and Bolsheviks

 April 1926 Makhno wants to join the Ukrainian territory, yet


Crimea didn’t join Makhno and still with Bolshevik and become
part of the USSR
POST RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

• Crimea become part of Ukraine when the leader of


Soviets: Nikita Khrushchev gave the peninsula to his
native land in 1954.

• Soviet Union broke up in 1991, Russian Federation


President Boris Yeltsin unexpectedly didn’t attempt to
regain Crimea during negotiations with Ukraine
• so Crimea became part of the newly independent Ukraine.
CURRENT SITUATION

• In Crimea, about 58% of 2 million identify


themselves as Russians, 24% as ethnic
Ukrainian and 12% as Tatars

• Crimea and Russia have strong ties in Economic


and Social sectors, because Crimea serves as
Russians’ tourism destination
UKRAINE CRISIS

• Ex-president of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych didn’t signed an agreement


with EU
• Association Agreement of Ukraine and EU: where Ukraine become part of EU
Victor Yanukovych • which gives visa-free movement of people, financial support, access to
EU markets, modernisation of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, etc.

• Victor instead fled to Russia, claiming Putin “saved his life”. Victor
also showed his support to Russia, wanting to make Russia as official
language of Ukraine.

• This resulted into protests from the society of Ukraine, many Pro-
Russians emerged, and Crimea votes to join Russian in a referendum
UKRAINE CRISIS

• Russians send their military assets to Crimea to


protect their country interest

• Ukraine take this action as an invasion
