Tuberculosis ( TB )

Tuberculosis :

 Tuberculosis ( TB ) is caused by a bacterium called
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the
lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the
kidney, spine, and brain.

 But TB in other parts of the body, such as the kidney or spine, is


usually not infectious.

 If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.

TB is spread by :

TB disease in the lungs or throat can be infectious. This means that the bacteria can be spread to other people. TB
is transmitted to the others when a person with infectious TB coughs, talks, sings, laughs or sneezes.

When a person breathes in TB bacteria, the bacteria can settle in the lungs and begin to grow. From there, they
can move through the blood to other parts of the body, such as the kidney, spine, and brain. TB in other parts of
the body, such as the kidney or spine, is usually not infectious.
TB is NOT Spread by :

• shaking someone’s hand


• sharing food or drink
• touching bed linens or toilet seats.
TB Disease Has symptoms :

1. A bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer


2. Pain in the chest
3. Coughing up blood or sputum
4. Weakness or fatigue
5. Weight loss
6. No appetite
7. Chills
8. Fever
9. Sweating at night
10.Usually feels sick

conditions exist:

1. Latent TB
infection

2. TB disease
Active and Latent TB
• Children • People with co – morbidities : Diabetes ,
• New immigrants , refugees immunosuppressive disoders
Vulnerable • Older people • Poor nutrition
Groups • Substance misusers • Vitamin D deficiency
• Homeless • Lack of resources and information
• Mental healt patients • Smoking
• Known TB contacs
• Asian / African groups
• People with co – infection : HIV , Hep B

Treatment for Latent TB and TB disease :

2. TB disease can be treated by taking several drugs for 6 to 9 months. There are 10 drugs currently approved by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating TB.
the approved drugs. If they stop taking the drugs too soon, they can become sick again; if they do not take the drugs
correctly, the TB bacteria that are still alive may become resistant to those drugs. TB that is resistant to drugs is harder and
more expensive to treat.
Prevention :
Summary :

TB is a disease that is transmitted through sputum splashes but


not all who are exposed to sputum from people who suffer from
TB will suffer from TB

TB will become active if the person affected by the bacteria is not


healthty or their health is declining .
