Active management of third stage of labour consist of interventions designed
to facilitate the delivery of placenta by increasing uterine contractions and to
prevent postpartum haemorrhage by averting uterine atony
 PRINCIPLES - Excite powerful uterine contractions within one minute of
delivery of the baby by giving parenteral oxytocics. It produces early
placental seperations and also produce effective uterine contractions
ADVANTAGES - Minimizes blood loss upto 1/5 th and shortens duration of
third stage one to half
DISADVANTAGES – Requires oxytocics and items needed for injections.
Requires a birth attendant with skill in – Observation , Giving an injection
and Controlled cord traction .

Conclusion:- Active management of third stage of labour includes –


Oxytocin ; Cord clamping; Controlled cord traction; Fundal massage
