Detection and Segmentation of

Brain Tumor from MRI Images Using

Thresholding & K-Means Clustering
Technique
INTRODUCTION
• Processing of magnetic resonance
images (MRI) is one among the parts of
the image processing in medical field,
which is the most emerging field from
past few days.
• Manual segmentation of brain tumor is
time consuming and challenging task.
• The tumor detection is often a
preliminary phase to solve the
segmentation problem.
ABSTRACT
• Accurate detection of size and location of
brain tumor plays a vital role in the
diagnosis of tumor. The proposed
technique can be efficiently applied to
detect and extract the brain tumor from
MRI images obtained from patient’s data
base.
PROPOSED SYSTEM
• The proposed strategy to detect &
extraction of brain tumour from patient’s
MRI scan images of the brain.
• This method incorporates with some
noise removal functions, segmentation
and morphological operations which are
the basic concepts of image processing.
• Detection and extraction of tumour from
MRI scan images of the brain is done by
using MATLAB software.
STEPS OF TUMOR DETECTION
DESCRIPTION
• Image Acquisition: Images are obtained using
MRI scan and these scanned images are displayed in
a two dimensional matrices having pixels as its
elements.
• Pre-Processing Stage: In this phase image is
enhanced in the way that finer details & they can
give best possible results.
• Segmentation: Image segmentation is based on
the division of the image into regions. Division is
done on the basis of similar attributes. Similarities
are separated out into groups.
DESCRIPTION
• Threshold Segmentation: Threshold
segmentation is one of the simplest
segmentation methods. The input gray scale
image is converted into a binary format.
• Morphological Operators: Morphological
operators are applied after the threshold
segmentation.
ADVANTAGES
• Automatic extraction of tumor from MRI image.
• Accurate region extraction of affected regions.
• Premalignant tumor is a pre cancerous stage is
also detected.
• Morphological operators separates the tumor
part of the image from the original scanned
image highlighting the output.
