 An adiabatic process is one in which no
heat is gained or lost by the system.
The first law of thermodynamics with Q=0
shows that all the change in internal
energy is in the form of work done. This
puts a constraint on the heat
engine process leading to the adiabatic
conditionshown below. This condition can
be used to derive the expression for the
work done during an adiabatic process.
 An adiabatic process is the one in which
heat is prevented from crossing the
boundary of the system. i.e. no heat is
transferred to or from the fluid during the
process. That is, an adiabatic process is one
undergone by a system which is thermally
insulated from its surroundings. From the
non-flow energy equation
 Q+ W = u2-u1
 For an adiabatic process Q = 0, we have
 W = -(u2-u1)
 This equation is true for an adiabatic non-
flow process whether or not the process is
reversible. In an adiabatic compression
process all the work done on the fluid goes
to increasing the internal energy of the
fluid. Similarly in an adiabatic expansion
process, the work done by the fluid is at the
expense of a reduction in the internal
energy of the fluid.
 A reversible adiabatic process is called
isentropic (constant entropy) process. For a
vapor undergoing a reversible adiabatic
process the work done can be found from
equation given above by evaluating u1 and u2
from. For a perfect gas a law relating p and v
has been obtained for a reversible adiabatic
process as :
 pv(gamma) = constant Each perfect gas
undergoing a reversible adiabatic process have
its own value of (gamma) .
 Adiabatic reversible process is applied in
the designing of insulated walls in adiabatic
flame temperature.

 An insulated wall acts as adiabatic

boundary that does not allow heat transfer
becomes impermeable the system is called
to be adiabatically insulated.
 A process that is reversible and adiabatic is
called an adiabatic reversible process. An
adiabatic process is a thermodynamic
process where there is no heat transfer.

 The term "adiabatic" literally means

impassable or impermeable.
 Adiabatic systems are thermally insulated
systems so they do not let out or let in heat
during the process. A reversible process is a
process wherein quantity of heat
transferred is directly proportional to the
systems entropy change. Since there is no
entropy change, the heat transferred is
zero. Thus this process is an adiabatic
reversible process. These processes are also
called iso entropic processes.
 It is a thermodynamic process which takes
place in a closed system and has no fluid
flow and flow work=0.
 There is no interaction in the system during
the process.
 Non flow process for a perfect gas is:
 Heating at Constant volume
 Also know as Isochoric Process.
 1 kg of steam at 100 bar and 357 C° expands
reversibly in a perfactly thermally insulated
cylinder behind a piston until the pressure is
38 bar and the steam is then dry saturated .
 Calculate the work done ?
