Introduction to CFD
1. CFD is the analysis of systems involving fluid flow, heat transfer and
associated phenomena such as chemical reactions by means of
computer based simulation.
2. A tool for solving PDE’s.
3. Fundamental Principles
a. Mass is conserved.
b. Newton’s second law.
c. Energy is conserved.
Purpose and Aim
1. Simulation based design instead of “build and test”

2. Physical fluid phenomena that are difficult for experiment.

Example- Full scale simulation of ships and airplanes,
Environmental effects( wind, weather ) Explosions etc.
Fig- Some Applications of CFD
Advantages
1. Relatively low cost
2. Speed
3. Ability to simulate real conditions
4. Comprehensive information
Limitations
1. The CFD solutions can only be as accurate as the physical
model on which they are based.
2. Solving equations on computer introduces numerical
errors.
3. Boundary conditions- the accuracy of CFD solution is as
good as the initial conditions.
Steps Involved

Pre-Processing Solving Post-Processing

• Geometry definition • Fluid material and flow • Obtain Contours,

• Grid generation properties vectors, path lines.
• Boundary conditions
1. 2.

3. 4.
Conclusions
CFD is a powerful tool to solve complex flows in engineering systems.
However extreme care should be taken while:
• Generating geometry and grids
• Choosing flow model
• Boundary conditions
• Material properties
• Convergence criteria (grid independence)
Unless proper inputs are given and solution is checked, the solution we get may not
be the real solution.
