ABSTRACT
 As 5G wireless system considered as boon to the wireless communication
system, studying its characteristic on MAC layer functionalities is become
need of the hour and that also helps us identifying the right applications for its
use.
 This paper consolidates concepts and understanding of various MAC layer
protocols proposed for the 5G wireless communication systems and also
discuss their advantage and disadvantages.
 More emphasis is given on Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA)
techniques as it is a key technique proposed for 5G wireless systems to meet
demands on low latency, high reliability, massive connectivity, improved
fairness and high throughput.
5TH GENERATION WIRELESS SYSTEM

 Uses millimeter wave bands (26, 28,38and 60 GHZ) that offer

performance as high as 20Gbps.
 Provides a new generation of dynamic radio access networks
(RANs).
 Operate under different regulatory and spectrum sharing scenarios.
 Incorporates several radio interface technologies operating as a
function of the user needs.
 Uses New lean signaling/control information to guarantee latency
and reliability, support spectrum flexibility, allow separation of data
and control information, support large variety of devices with very
different capabilities, and ensure energy efficiency.
POTENTIAL 5G APPLICATIONS
NEED FOR MAC LAYER ENHANCEMENT

 The rapid growth of multimedia services, such as

interactive game and television applications, cannot be
coped with the scarce radio frequency (RF) spectrum
resources.
 The communication architecture and protocols,
especially at the MAC layer, need to be revised to adapt
signaling and resource allocation and cope with severe
channel attenuation, directionality, and blockage.
THREE ASPECTS OF THE MAC LAYER
DESIGN CHALLENGES

 Control channel architecture

 Initial access, mobility management, and handover
 Resource allocation and interference management
FULL-DUPLEX MAC PROTOCOL
 At Physical layer level, Full-Duplex must reduce the use spectrum making
the communication efficient.
 At MAC layer level the protocol must optimizes the network and reduces
the chances of collision.
 The problem of a hidden node due to highly directional communication can
also arise just like it used to happen in the case of WiFi standards.
HARQ RTT

• The HARQ RTT is scaled linearly with the TTI

length.
• The HARQ RTT would not satisfy the 1 ms URLLC
latency target (i.e. 8_0:143 ms > 1 ms).
• Since relying on a single (very conservative)
transmission would have a significant cost on the
spectral efficiency,
SCMA

• SCMA is a multi-dimensional codebook-based non-

orthogonal multiple access technique.
• The key component is SCMA encoder which joins
modulation and spreading.
• It maps user’s data bits to a K-dimensional complex
sparse codeword selected from the given codebook,

NOMA

 The key feature of NOMA is that multiple users will

be allocated at different power levels, depending on
their channel conditions
 Communication with these users is happening at the
same time, code and frequency channels.

CONCLUSION & FUTURE SCOPE

 In this paper, a number of potential techniques for the

future 5G systems are introduced. Although these
techniques may be only a small portion of what would
be used in 5G systems, they shed light on promising
technology developing trend.
 To achieve the goal of IMT-2020 and beyond, we
believe that there will be greater breakthroughs in
wireless communication technology as the further
researches and development go.
