Protected Cultivation of

Gerbera
GERBERA CULTIVATION
Contd….
Vermiwash used @50% and 75% twice a week in
addition to 19-19-19 of NPK. It is reported that
performance of gerbera cv. Rosalin is reported
significantly better under naturally ventilated GH
where as followed Sunway performed better (upto
65-75 cm stem length) and found floriferous
when sprayed with 75% vermiwash, grown in
media amended with vermicompost under pad-fan
system
Importance
 Used as cut flowers and the cut blooms have long
vase life.

 Decoration on occasions
 Landscaping (ideal for beds, borders, pots and rock
gardens)

 Floral Bouquet

 Cosmetics

• Crop period : 2-2.5 Years
• Flower initiation: 2-3 months after planting
Polyhouse Management
 Day Temp: 25-27°C

 Night Temp: 12- 14°C

 For flowering: 23°C.

 RH: Initial 80-90%; 65-70% Later (should not exceed 90%)

 Light intensity (lux)-35,000 – 40,000

 Soil- Loam, well drained

 Soil-less- Soil:Rice Husk:FYM (2:1:1)

Other management
 Air circulatory fan is kept switched on for 8 hours
every day.

 Foggers and screen also used for controlling the high

temperature and protecting from excessive sunheat.

70 cm 30 cm
Bed Preparation
Bed sterilization
The beds are treated thoroughly with hydrogen
peroxide ( H2O2) @ of 20 ml / litre water and
poly house closed for 7 hours.
After that, irrigated profusely to drain out the
chemical residue.
Application of
SSP
Magnesium sulphate
Planting method

Row-Row (cm) = 40
Plant-Plant (cm) = 30
Plant per sqmt = 6-9
Crown portion should
be above ground level
Water management
 Drip irrigation system is installed providing two lateral line per bed
for irrigation.
 The lateral has the dripper 30 cm apart and placed away from the
plant to avoid rotting.
 Water requirement- 300-500 -700 ml / plant/ day
 Beds are kept moderately moist by giving 500 ml of water per
drippers per day during summer. It is less thereafter.
Irrigation and Fertigation GERBERA
First 21 days - irrigation with water can / shower.

Calcium Nitrate @ 0.15 g / plantonce a week
Magnesium Sulphate and micro nutrients as per the
requirement.
Fertigation solution EC – 1.5 mS/cm
Plant growth regulator

• Humic acid used for achieving increase in root,

sucker production, quality and flower-yield.
• Monthly application of humic acid at 10
ml/litre done on plant, to enhance the nutrient
uptake and increased the growth rate.
Weeding & raking of soil
• Kept weed free by hand weeding at regular intervals.
• Earthing up operation also carried out.
• Due to daily irrigation, the surface of the gerbera bed
becomes hard hence raking of soil aeration in the root
zone of the plant. This operation should be done
regularly.
Disbudding
• Removal of inferior quality flowers at the initial
stage after plantation (flowering starts after 75-90
days from the date of plantation).
• Initially flowers are of inferior quality, hence these
flowers should be removed from the base of the
flowers stalk.

Harvesting
• Harvested when outer ray florets completely
elongated and disc florets were completely
developed.
• The heel of the stalk is cut about 2-3 cm above
the base and flower stalks are kept immediately
in fresh chlorinated water.
