LITERATURE REVIEW

• Generation of Electricity by Using Exhaust fro

m Bike by S.Vijaya Kumar, Amit Kumar Singh,
Athul Sabu and Mohamed Farhan. According to
their study, it has been identified that there a
re large potentials of energy savings through t
he use of waste heat recovery technologies. W
aste heat recovery entails capturing and reusi
ng the waste heat from internal combustion e
ngine and using it for heating or generating m
echanical or electrical work.
• D.A. Nikam et al. analyzed the literature review on de
sign and development of vertical axis wind turbine bl
ade. This paper explains that the wind mill such as ver
tical and horizontal wind mill is widely used for energ
y production. The horizontal wind mill is highly used f
or large scale applications which require more space
and huge investment. Whereas the vertical wind mill
is suitable for domestic application at low cost. The g
eneration of electricity is affected by the geometry a
nd orientation of the blade in the wind turbine.. The
optimized blade parameter and its specification can i
mprove the generation of electricity.
• Power Generation by Exhaust Gases On Diesel Engi
ne by Kranthi Kumar Guduru, Yakoob Kol ipak, Shan
ker. B and N. Suresh.Waste heat recovery entails cap
turing and reusing the waste heat from internal co
mbustion engine and using it for heating or generati
ng mechanical or electrical work. It would also help
to recognize the improvement in performance and
emissions of the engine if these technologies were
adopted by the automotive manufacturers.
COMPONENTS

• Battery
• Engine
• Bearing
• Sprocket with chain drive
• Turbine
• D.C Generator
BATTERY

• A battery is one or more electrochemical cells,

which store chemical energy and make it
available as electric current.
• There are two types of batteries, primary
(disposable) and secondary (rechargeable), both
of which convert chemical energy to electrical
energy.
ENGINE

• An engine or motor is a machine designed to

convert energy into useful mechanical motion.
• Heat engines, including internal combustion
engines and external combustion engines (such as
steam engines) burn a fuel to create heat, which
then creates motion.
BEARING

• Bearings are intended to direct the motion of

shafts and axles and forces acting on them.
• Bearing is an machine element which
support another moving machine element
(known as journal).
• It permits a relative motion between the
contact surfaces of the members, while
carrying the load.
SPROCKET WITH CHAIN DRIVE

• A sprocket or sprocket-wheel is a profiled wheel wit

h teeth, or cogs, that mesh with a chain, track or ot
her perforated or indented material.
• The name 'sprocket' applies generally to any wheel
upon which radial projections engage a chain passin
g over it.
TURBINE

• A Wind turbine is a mechanical device that

extracts kinetic energy of wind, and converts
it into rotary motion.
• The rotary motion of the turbine is particularly
suited to be used to drive an electrical
generator
D.C GENERATOR

• In electricity generation, an electric generator is

a device that converts mechanical energy to
electrical energy.
• A generator forces electric current to flow
through an external circuit.
• The source of mechanical energy may be a
reciprocating ,turbine steam engine etc
OBJECTIVES

• To generate electricity by coverting kinetic energy o

f exhaust to mechanical energy for turbine rotation
which results in generation of electricity with the h
elp of DC generator .
METHODOLOGY

• A Turbine is mounted at the end of the engine exha

ust so that the exhaust gases passes through this tu
rbine
• The output of the engine exhaust gas hits the turbin
e blades and make them to rotate and a generator i
s coupled to the turbine
• Rotational movement of the generator produces ele
ctricity which is stored in the battery
Block diagram
ADVANTAGES

• It is an very economical setup

• Engine performance and electricity generation.
• Can be produced power from waste gas
• The electricity can be used for electrical equipment
s for domestic purposes and to charge the battery.
DISADVANTAGES

• Due to carbon emission the turbine can be choked

earlier
• Electricity generator producing low electricity
APPLICATIONS

• In automobile vehicles to charge the mobile phones

like in bike.
• Using replaceable battery,it can be used in indoors
also.
• All automobile industries.

CALCULATIONS
• Area of Swept, A = (22/7) x (radius of turbine)²
• Velocity of the Turbine = ((22/7)x D x N)/60
Where D=diameter of turbine
N=number of revolution per minute
• Power available at the turbine,
P= (1/2) x Density x (Velocity)³xCpxArea
• Voltage , V = pØN/60
Where p= no of field poles = 4
Ø = flux produced per pole
• Current , I =P/V
• Swept area by the turbine,
A = (22/7) x radius²

• Maximum generator voltage,
Vmax= pØNmax/60
I.e, Ø =(Vmax × 60)/pNmax
=(12 × 60)/4× 500
=0.36 wb
• Actual voltage,Vact =pØN/60
=(4×0.36×245)/60

• The maximum voltage of Dynamo i.e. 12 volts is obt
ained when the generator is rotated at 500rpm .
• The electricity thus generated can be used to charg
e the battery and can be used for our domestic pur
poses.
• The turbine is rotating at different speeds due to ch

the waste energy by using a turbine and to produce
optimum amount of electrical energy to charge a ba
ttery.

the use of waste recovery technologies.
• It would also help to recognize the improvement in
performance and emissions of the engine if these t
