PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT CONTINUOS
IMPROVEMENT CYCLE (PDCA CYCLE)

It teaches organizations to

PLAN an action
Doit
CHECK it
ACT on it
When to Use Plan-Do-Check-Act?

 As a model for continuous improvement

 When starting a new improvement project
 When developing a new or improved design of a process,
product or service
 Exploring a range of possible new solutions to problems
 When implementing any change
 Avoiding the large scale wastage of resources that comes
with full scale implementation of poor solution

 Poka-Yoke ( Error-Proofing/Mistake-Proofing)

Remember 3 rules

Don’t ACCEPT Don’t MAKE Don’t PASS on

a defect a defect a defect

person, machine, factory, system,
etc., in converting inputs into useful
outputs.

OUTPUT ÷ INPUT = Productivity

 PRODUCTIVITY = EFFICIENCY + EFFECTIVENESS

Isability to avoid wasting materials, energy, efforts,
money, and time in doing something or in producing
a desired result.

 Effectiveness- is doing the right things

Isthe capability of producing a desired result or the

method".[1] Innovation is often also viewed as the
application of better solutions that meet new
requirements, unarticulated needs, or
existing market needs.

 Innovation: novelty + utility ( market demand or social need exist)

vs

Innovation
 The implementation of a:
New or significantly improved
Product (that is, a physical good or service
Process

New marketing method or

New organizational method
Businesspractices
Workplace organization or external relations
What is KM for Productivity and
Innovation?

Knowledge is the source of wealth.

Applied to tasks we already know,
it becomes productivity. Applied to
tasks that are new it becomes
innovation.
