The Computer Network

One of the greatest advancement in technology and communication over the past 20 years has been the
development and advancement of the computer network. From emailing a friend to on-line bill paying to
downloading data off the Internet to e-commerce, networking has made our world much smaller and
changed the way we communicate forever. 3
NETWORK TOPOLOGIES

4
• PAN (PERSONAL AREA NETWORK)
• LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK)
• CAN (CAMPUS AREA NETWORK)
• MAN (METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK)
• WAN (WIDE AREA NETWORK)
• GAN (GLOBAL AREA NETWOK)

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER NETWORKS BY SIZE 5

Personal Area Network (PAN)

• Very small scale network

• Range is less than 2 meters
• Cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players

6
Local Area Network (LAN)
• Contains printers, servers and computers
• Systems are close to each other
• Contained in one office or building
• Organizations often have several LANS

7
Campus Area Networks
(CAN)
• A LAN in one large geographic area

• Resources related to the same organization

• Each department shares the LAN

8
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

• Large network that connects

different organizations

• Shares regional resources

• A network provider sells time

9
Wide Area Networks (WAN)
• Two or more LANs connected

• Over a large geographic area

• Typically use public or leased lines

• Phone lines
• Satellite

• The US department of defense uses WAN

10
• Large number of LANs connected
• All over a the world
Global Area Networks (GAN) • Typically use public or leased lines
• Phone lines
• Satellite
• The Internet is a GAN

11
Wireless Network

• Data transmitted through the air

• LANs use radio waves
• WANs use microwave signals
• Easy to setup
• Difficult to secure 12
PROS OF WIRELESS CONNECTIONS
• LACK OF MESS

• MOBILITY

• SETUP

13
CONS OF WIRELESS CONNECTIONS

• SPEED

• RELIABILITY

• DISTANCE SENSITIVE
