GENERAL INFORMATION ON SOUTH KOREA

Hi today I will be telling you and informing you about the country of South Korea. This
country is located to the South of Asia by the Yellow, East China Seas and also by the
Sea of Japan. The language that is spoken is Korean. The current population in South
Korea is 51,238,20 people.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
• One physical feature about South Korea is, the tallest mountain in South
Korea the name is Mt. Hallasan it is 6,398 ft. high. South Korea has a lot of
mountains and most of those mountains are called Taebaek mountains, they
are 5,121 ft. high.
• Most people live in the biggest city there called, Seoul which is also the capital
of South Korea.
• South Korea has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are
usually long, cold and dry. Summers are very short, hot, and humid. Spring
and autumn are pleasant but also short in duration.

GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS
• South Korea is a democratic republic with three principal branches of the
government the executive, legislative, and the judicial branches.
• The current governor is Ahn Hee-jung, he was born on the 1st of May 1965,
he is also a South Korean politician. He served as the 36th and 37th Governor
of South Chungcheong Province.
• The economy of South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and the
11th largest in the world. It is a mixed economy dominated by called chaebols,
however, the dominance of chaebol is unlikely and at risk to support the
transformation of Korean.
• South Korea's main exports include electronic products, machinery, motor
vehicles, steel, ships, and textiles and clothing and sometimes automobiles.
FOOD AND DRINK
• Some foods that are still eaten today are Kimchi (Spicy), Bibimbap (Mixed
Rice), Bulgogi (marinated beef barbecue), and Japchae (stir-fried noodles).
• Some drinks that are still drunken today are, Bokbunja ju (sweet flavor is
similar to dessert wine),Banana Milk, and Omija tea.

VALUES AND BELIEFS
• Some examples of the types of religions in South Korea would be like,
shamanism, Confucianism, and Buddhism to Christianity, Islam, and other
religions. Also Shamanism was the dominant religion in South Korea.
FAMILY AND EDUCATION
• A normal family in South Korea would be like any other family they wake up,
eat breakfast go to school or work. come back from school or work, do any
homework you have to do, then take a shower and go to bed.
• A normal child in South Korea would go to elementary for 1st-5th grade. Then
in middle school they would go from 6th-8th.Then in high school they would
go from 9th-12th.After high school they would go to college for 2 years.
CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS
• Some traditions and holidays that are still celebrated today are like New Year's
Day, Seollal (or Lunar New Year's Day, celebrated for 3 days), Chuseok (Mid-
autumn Festival on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, celebrated for 3
days), Buddha's Birthday (on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month), Children's
Day.
SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS
South Korea’s high-tech service-based economy, is a foreign investment success
story, becoming the first recipient of OECD. Development Assistance Committee
funds to later become a donor of the funds. The nation has seen steady growth
and poverty reduction since the 1960s and is now the world’s seventh-largest
exporter and 11th-largest economy overall.
Hwang Woo-suk became an international sensation a decade ago when he
claimed to have cloned a human embryo and produced a stem-cell line from it
for the first time in history. He further cemented his fame when he later claimed
that his team had generated cloned stem cells that matched the DNA of
patients, another purported scientific first that promised hope for curing
diseases.
ENERGY RESOURCES
Some renewable and nonrenewable resources are primarily nuclear power, coal,
oil, and liquefied natural gas. Also in 1985, 22% came from nuclear plants then
in operation, 74% from non-nuclear thermal plants, and 4% from hydroelectric
sites.
INTERESTING FACTS
• One interesting fact about South Korea is that the name Korea comes from Goryeo, which
was the name given to the dynasty established by General Wang Geon in AD (Korean version
for B.C.). Goryeo also means high and clear.
• Another interesting fact about South Korea is that South Korean men love makeup, spending
close to US $900 million a year, or a quarter of the world’s men’s cosmetics. Up to 20% of the
male Korean population is reported to use makeup regularly.
• One more interesting fact about South Korea is that In South Korea, it is perfectly legal to
drink alcohol in public. People can carry open containers of their favorite alcoholic beverage
and even take a drink or two.
NATIVE ANIMALS
Some animals that are native to South Korea would be like the Amur leopard, Lynx,
Minke Whale, White Naped Crane, and the Siberian Musk Deer. I didn’t find any of my
animals at the Zoo.
