• Water is becoming one of the important and limited resources available to us.
Water scarcity is world-wide problem. Thus, a sustainable, effective and
cheapest method of wastewater treatment is yet to be reality. Biological
wastewater treatment system have come a long way in the past years, but one
technology is pioneering a revolutionary new approach. Therefore, an attempt
is made to reuse the wastewater after giving low cost effective treatment with
the help of vermifilter.

• Vermifiltration is a new and innovative technology in which the combined

action of earthworms’ activity and the adsorption properties of other
materials like soil, sand and gravel. Earthworms’ body works as a bio-filter and
have been found to remove BOD, COD, TDS and TSS by general mechanism of
ingestion, biodegradation and adsorption through body walls. There is no
sludge formation in vermifiltration process which requires additional cost on
landfill disposal and it is also odour-free process.

• This paper presents a systematic study of a bio-vermifilter system for

treatment of canteen wastewater in our college using two units: Vertical unit
and Horizontal unit
Canteen
wastewater
• Raw waste water is pumped 1st to the vertical flow (VF) unit at
different hydraulic loading rate from a feeding tank and then
the effluent tank is further transferred to the 2nd stage i.e.
horizontal flow (HF) unit.
• Garden soil and vermicompost mixed in ratio 1:3 by volume is
filled in the upper layer of VF, it is known as worm active layer.
• Both VF and HF unit are planted with macrophyte Canna
indica (perennial plant).
• Waste water flows from top to bottom in VF unit, where as in
HF unit flow is carried out at the bottom(1.5% slope is set).
• Single stage reactor(VF and HF) unit cannot achieve high
removal of total nitrogen due to their inability to provide both
aerobic and aerobic conditions at the same time, hence both
VF and HF unit combined with each other in order to exploit
its specific advantages .
• The waste water of different compositions are prepared which
is poured to the reactor.
• The waste water sample were analyzed for different
parameters using different methods. Thus it is performed in
stages.
• Microphytes are group of autotrophic organisms that have
ability to grow rapidly, produce more biomass per surface
than any natural source.
• The earth worms used in this process improves the nutrient
availability, drainage, soil structure, its productivity.
• It is economical, affordable and enviourmental sustainable for
treatment of wastewater.
• Reduction of pollutants with the in-build pathogens removal
property.
• Some reaserchers have shown that vermicomposting is
healthier than organic fertilizers as compost and manure.
• The limitations of vermifiltration like wastewater feeding
mode, vermifiltration cleaning process, saline water
treatment, heavy metals removals from wastewater.
• The worms are sensitive to pH, temperature and moisture
content which must be controlled during the process.
OUTCOME
• The vermi-filtered water is clean and can be recycled in many
industrial plants for production processes & various secondary
uses.
• Filtered water can also be used for irrigation.
• Economical & Eco-friendly.
• It has an in-built pH buffering ability and hence can accept waste
water within a pH range 4 to 9 without any pH adjustment.
• Vermifiltration is a sustainable technology for wastewater
treatment.
