Motivation

Since Statistics is part of Mathematics,

let’s have a simple challenge in order to
know ourselves better by using
kokology.
Kokology is a series of psychological
games designed to reveal your hidden
attitudes about family,love,work and
more.

Circle, Triangle, Square.

You’ll need a pen and a paper for this
game. Using a single circle and any
number of triangles and squares, draw
a design on the paper. (1 minute)
How did your artwork turn out? Is it suitable
for hanging on the refrigerator door?
The real meaning of the design you drew
can be found in your use of the three basic
shapes. In this exercise the triangles represent
work and study, the squares stands for society
and its rules, and the lone circle is a symbol of
yourself.
If you drew a very large circle, you possess
an equally great sense of self. That can be a
good thing when it leads to positive self-regard,
but for some people it signifies a distorted notion
of their place in the world- in other words, at its
center.
If you drew a very small circle, you see
yourself as significant or dwarfed by the world
around you. Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by
all those triangles and squares; they’re made of the
same points and lines as you are!
The number and size of triangles you used
represents your work or school responsibilities.
Large triangles denote your sense of the importance
of your work and the fulfillment you find in it,while a
large number of triangles means you’re working on
several projects at once. Be careful if you have too
many triangles; it may mean you need to cut down
on your workload before it wears you out.
The squares in your design stand for how you
feel about society and other people. If you used very
large squares, it indicates you’re under pressure to
conform or fit in. if you put many squares in your
design, it shows that you tend to feel lost in the
crowd or burdened by too many rules.
If the shapes in your design connect, overlap,
and share border; it means you’re enjoying a degree
of integration and harmony between those aspects
of your life. If all the shapes occupy separate
spaces, it’s likely you’ll see signs of isolation and
lack of connection in your life as well.
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you
should be able to:
a. distinguishes between parameter
and statistic.

b. create your own definition of

parameter and statistics;

c. perform and cooperate with group

mates in doing activities related to
parameter and statistic;

d. relate importance of parameters and

statistics in our lives.

the Lesson
Learning Stations

You will be grouped into three and

prepare 1 whole paper. Each group will
be assigned to every station. When I
say “go” and you will proceed to the
next station. Then, you will take note of
the concepts learned in each station;
tasks are given as well . At the end of
the activity, you will create a
comparison table (write it in manila
paper) and present it to the class. (20
minutes)

Discussion
Parameter and
Statistic
Population- The totality of subjects
(people,animals or objects) under
consideration.
Sample- The portion chosen from a
population.
Parameter- the measurement or
quantity that describes the population.
Statistic (Sample Statistic)- the
measurement or quantity that describe
a sample

BASIS FOR
STATISTIC PARAMETER
COMPARISON

Meaning Statistic is a Parameter

measure which refers to a
describes a measure which
fraction of describes
population. population.

Practice
exercise
1. In order to test the effect of the
new drug to humans, 20 patients
were given the dose. After a
minute, it was found out that the
body temperature in average,
decreased by 2 oC. Answer the
ff:
a. Are the 20 patients mentioned
above population or sample?
b. Is the 2 oC decrease in the
body temperature considered
parameter or statistic?
Answer/Solution:

a. The 20 patients taken are

considered sample.

b. Since the measurement 2

oC refers to the average

decrease of the 20 patients

(sample), it is therefore
considered statistic.
2. A researcher wants to know
the average weight of females
aged 22 years or older in Iloilo
City. The researcher obtains
the average weight of 54 kg,
from a random sample of 40
females.

Describe the given quantity as

parameter or statistic.
Answer/Solution:

In the given situation, the

statistics are the average
weight of 54 kg, calculated
from a simple random sample
of 40 females in Iloilo City
while the parameter is the
mean weight of all females
aged 22 years or older.
Real-life Examples/
situations
A statistic is a measure based on
a sample.

A parameter is a measure of an
entire population.

Example of parameter: The

average amount of left handed
people in Bo. Obrero, Lapuz.

Example of Statistic:The average

amount of left handed people in
Bo Obrero National High School.
Let’s generaLize…
1. How will you compare or
distinguish parameter from
statistic?

2. Cite real life situations or

examples related to parameter
and statistic..
Evaluation
Direction: Find a pair and create a
concept map on how mastered the
lesson.
