The

Phonovisual
Method
“An auditory and visual
discrimination of speech
sounds.”
A first glance of what the
Phonovisual Method implies
1. Why do children need to learn phonics
at early ages?
2. How can we make this fun to children?
3. What sounds do you consider students
struggle with the most?
4. What is phonemic distortion?
5. What do voiced and voiceless sounds
mean?
6. What points of articulation are found in
the articulatory system?
Why do children need to learn
phonics at early ages?
When we emphasize phonics,
we provide a reading foundation for each
child that is based on
the letters and sounds of the alphabet.
Once a child learns the 26 letters with
their 44 sounds and 70 common spellings,
they have the tools they need to read
words-- any words -- whether they have
ever seen them or not.
How can we make this fun to
children?

The phonovisual Method focuses its

instruction on visual referents which are
the phonovisual charts; nevertheless,
teachers are free to create board games,
smartboard activities, learning stations,
and many other strategies which will
certainly strengthen childrens’ learning of
new sounds.
What sounds do you consider
students struggle with the most?

There are certain sounds that are difficult

to articulate by Spanish speakers, specially
those which can not be transferred from
their mother tongue.
What is phonemic distortion?
In a phonemic distortion (also called a phonological disorders) the
child is having trouble learning the sound system of the language,
failing to recognize which sound-contrasts also contrast meaning.
For example, the sounds /k/ and /t/ may not be recognized as
having different meanings, so "call" and "tall" might be treated as
homophones, both being pronounced as "tall." As a result, the
number of error sounds is often (though not always) greater than
with articulation disorders and substitutions are usually the most
common error. Phonemic disorders are often treated using
minimal pairs (two words that differ by only one sound) to draw
the child's attention to the difference and its effect on
communication.
What do voiced and voiceless
sounds mean?

Voiced: Produces vibration of the vocal

cords.
Voiceless: Does not produce vibration of
the vocal cords.

*It’s really important to let students know about this.
