COMMON DEFICIENCY

DISEASES
DEFICENCY
– is a form of
malnutrition resulting from
inadequate supply of
certain nutrients in the
body for a long period of
time. Some common
deficiency diseases in this
country are as follows.
1. KWASHIORKOR – this is a severe
deficiency disease caused by absolute
lack of protein for long period of time.

Symptoms:
- Retarted growth
- general weakness
- Edema or swelling of the face
- Pigmentation or discoloration of the skin
and hair.
Sources:
protein, rich foods such as small fish,
meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese and
dried beans and nuts are eaten to
prevent or treat this diseases.

2. MARASMUS - deficiency
condition resulting from lack of
protein and calories over an
extended period of time. – these

3. GOITER – this refers to the enlarger of
the thyroid glands to lack of iodine.

IODINE – is needed by the thyroid


glands which produce thyroxin
hormones. These hormones affect your
mental and physical development and
maintain good throughout life.

Goiter is prevented by eating seafood,


seaweeds, shellfish, squids, vegetables
that grow near the sea and iodized
salt.
GOITER
4. RICKETS – this is the softening
or deformation of bones due to
lack of calcium, phosphorus and
Vitamin D.

Calcium and Phosphorus – are


responsible for hardening of
bones.

Vitamin D – from the sunlight is


needed so that calcium and
phosphorus can function well.
RICKETS
5. BOWLEGS ( SAKANG ) AND
KNOCK KNEE ( PIKI ) – are
examples of the poor bones
structure due to calcium
deficiency.
this diseases can be prevented
through a diet with adequate
amount of calcium and
phosphorus and vitamin D. Good
sources of calcium and
phosphorus are milk, cheese ,
dried beans, lean meats, eggs,
leafy vegetables. Vitamin D

6. BERI-BERI – this is a severe deficiency
disease caused by lacking of Vitamin B
or Thiamine.

Symptoms:
- Edema ( manas ) in face, head and
feet.
- Lack of appetite
- Fatigue
- Constipation
Food rich in Thiamine such as rice,
bread, dried beans, peas, nuts, liver,
heart, kidney help prevent BERI-BERI.
BERI-BERI
7. PELLAGRA – this is severe deficiency
disease caused by absolute lack of
Niacin or Nicotinic Acid.
SYMPTOMS:
- Diarrhea
- Dermatitis or skin eruptions
- Dementia or insanity
- Death
Skin exposed to sun such as hands
and rectum develop sores. Rich
sources of niacin that prevent pellagra
are liver, milk, yeast, cheese, dried
beans and nuts, peas, fish and poultry.
PELLAGRA
8. XEROPTHALMIA – this disease is
the result of severe deficiency in
Vitamin A.
SYMPTOMS:
- Poor vision
- Night blindness and dry eyelids
- Dry hair
- poor skin
- Low resistance to infection

XEROPTHALMIA
9. SCURVY – a severe deficiency
disease that results from lack of
Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid.
SYMPTOMS:
- Swelling and bleeding of the gums
- Weak bones and teeth
- Poor skin
- Slow healing of wounds
- Poor resistance against infection
Citrus fruits such as guavas, bananas,
mango, apples, strawberries,
guyabano, orange and papayas are
good sources of Vitamin C.
