INTRODUCTION

• With the economic growth and science-technology development, more and more large-scale civil
engineering structures such as tall buildings, underground buildings and landmark buildings and so
on are built around the world. While the economic growth is a kind of extensive growth: high input,
high consumption and high pollution, for that the energy saving technology is low, especially in
developing countries.
• The brightness of indoor environment is entirely maintained by artificial lighting, which has
consumed a large number of resources.
• Litracon presents the concept of light transmitting concrete in the form of a widely applicable new
building material. It can be used for interior or exterior walls, illuminated pavements or even in art
or design objects.
LITRACON
• Light transmitting concrete (litracon) also known
as translucent concrete, is a concrete based
building material having light-transmissive
property.
• Light-transmissive property is mainly due to
uniform distribution of optical fibres throughout its
body. It is also known to be transparent concrete.
• It is available as prefabricated building blocks and
panels.
OPTICAL FIBRE
• Flexible, transparent fiber
made up of glass or plastic.
• It transmits light between
two ends of the fiber.
• Optical fiber transmits light
so effectively that there is
almost no loss of light
conducted through the
fibers.
PRINCIPLE
• Translucent concrete works based on “Nano-Optics”.
• Fibers are placed directly on top of each other.
• Fibers act like slits and carry light through it.

ARRANGEMENT OF FIBRES IN LITRACON

LITERATURE REVIEW

Engineering ,Vol. 5, Issue. 6, 2018, PP 41-56.

• Transparent concrete is the new type of concrete introduced in modern era which carries special property of light transmitting
due to presence of glass rods or optical fibres & is also known as translucent concrete or light transmitting concrete.
• An optical glass fibre (or optical fibre) is a flexible, transparent fibre made of glass (silica) or plastic, slightly thicker than a
human hair & can function as waveguide, or “light pipe” to transmit light between the two ends.
• Main aim of the study is to design translucent concrete blocks with the use of glass rods & optical fibres with sand & cement
then analyse their various physical & engineering properties with respect to conventional concrete blocks by adding glass rods
& optical fibres of 1%, 2 %, 3 % 4 % 5% of concrete mix weight at 1.5 cms spacing respectively. From the study, it can be
concluded that there is 5% to 10% increase in initial compressive strength for 7 days & also 10% to 15% increase in initial
compressive strength for 28 days to a glass rod & optical fibres mix of 3% Whereas the initial & final characteristic
compressive strength gradually decreases with an increase in glass rods in the concrete mix.
CONCLUSION

• Mechanical behaviour of plain concrete cubes were studied for Compressive, Split tensile & Flexural strength
test with curing time of 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days which shows characteristic increase in its
strength behaviour.
• There is 5% to 10% increase in initial compressive strength for 7 days & also 10% to 15% increase in initial
compressive strength for 28 days for both glass rods & optical fibres mix of 3%.
• Whereas the initial & final characteristic compressive strength gradually decreases with an increase in
Optical fibres & glass rods in the concrete mix.
• It will also reduce the carbon emission which is hazardous for environment & can be treated as one of the
high performance concrete.
• The main advantage of translucent concrete is its lightweight which reduces the self-weight of any concrete
structure & also can be used as decorative concrete in interior design of buildings as panels in slabs, walls
etc.

• Lightweight LiTraCon ("Lightweight light transmitting concrete") is a lightweight translucent concrete

building material made of fine concrete embedded with 5% by weight of optical glass fibres.
• Light transmitting was developed in 2001 by Hungarian architect Ron Losonczi working with scientists
at the Technical University of Budapest.
• Light Litracon presents the concept of light transmitting concrete and Lightweight in the form of a
widely applicable new building material.
• It can be used for interior or exterior walls, illuminated pavements or even in art or design objects.
• By impregnating the concrete with optical glass fibres, light can be transmitted from the outside in or
inside out.
CONCLUSION

• The efficiency of the application of optical fibre is studied by comparing the strength with the
normal M20 grade concrete and the test results proved that the efficiency is more in all aspect.
• The fibres can be used in concrete for decorative purpose also lightweight is applicable for site.
• The major purpose of light transmitting concrete is created as a model and the light transmission is
made of the illuminating side of the concrete.
• The main advantage of lightweight is reducing the self-weight of the structure.
• This decorative concrete can be used in interior design of buildings as panels in slabs, walls etc.
• The decorative concrete can be used in place of windows because it can transmit the sunlight.
• Hence the application of optical fibre will make the concrete decorative as well as can make the
concrete structural efficient.

CONCRETE PRODUCT AND ITS PROPERTIES BY USING OPTICAL FIBERS , International Journal Of Modern Engineering

• Translucent concrete is a concrete based material with light-transferring properties, obtained due to
embedded light optical elements like Optical fibers used in concrete.
• Light is conducted through the concrete from one end to the other. This results into a certain light pattern
on the other surface, depending on the fiber structure.
• Optical fibers transmit light so effectively that there is virtually no loss of light conducted through the
fibers. This paper deals with the modeling of such translucent or transparent concrete blocks and panel
and their usage and also the advantages it brings in the field.
• The main purpose is to use sunlight as a light source to reduce the power consumption of illumination
and to use the optical fiber to sense the stress of structures and also use this concrete as an architectural
purpose of the building.
CONCLUSIONS

• Translucent concrete is smart way of architectural& aesthetical evolution.

• The optical fiber used for transmission of light doesnot affect much reduction
in strength of concrete.
• Weight of Translucent concrete is same as conventional concrete. It can be
used in many ways and be highly advantageous due to power saving. That’s
why green buildings would get an easy accreditation.
• Translucent concrete achieve utilization and optimization of light.
• Translucent concrete resist induced effects i.e. electromagnetic effects.
