Vietnam?
Why Did the United States
Fight a War in Vietnam?
Basically to hold the line
against the spread of world
Communism. America paid
for the war the French fought
against Communist Vietnam
as a part of the Truman
Doctrine (1947) “to help free
peoples to maintain their
free institutions and their
national integrity against …
totalitarian regimes.” In the
1950’s, America became
involved again.
Longest and Most Unpopular War
The Vietnam War was the longest and
most unpopular war in American
history. During the war:
The Johnson
administration used the
August 4 attack to obtain a
Congressional resolution,
now known as the Gulf of
Tonkin Resolution, that
gave the president broad
war powers.

U.S. Involvement and
Escalation
Use of napalm and Agent Orange
harmed civilians; U.S. search-and-
destroy missions uprooted civilians
and burned their villages, creating
millions of refugees.
U.S. Involvement and
Escalation
U.S. troops were frustrated by the
jungle terrain of Vietnam, guerilla-style
warfare, and by the instability of the
South Vietnamese government. The
Vietcong were fighting on familiar
terrain and were determined to win,
whatever the cost.
U.S. Involvement and
Escalation
Watching the graphic TV images of the
Vietnam war caused many Americans to
question the war. They began to doubt
the Johnson administration’s reports
that the enemy was near defeat.
A Nation Divided
KEY IDEA
An antiwar movement emerges
in the United States, putting
those who oppose the
government’s war policy
against those who support it.
