Government alone do not make

democracy work. Private initiative is also


essential , including a vital role for those
institutions which are collectively
described as “Civil Society”.
Civil society is the “third sector” of society,
along with government and business. It
comprises civil society organizations and
non-governmental organizations. The UN
recognizes the importance of partnering with
civil society, because it advances the
Organization’s ideals, and helps support its
work.
THREE MAJOR ELEMENTS OF CIVIL SOCIETY

Democracy is a system of government


by the whole population or all the
eligible members of a state.
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
include NGOs, trade unions, faith-based
organizations, indigenous people’s
movements, foundations and many
other.

Civil Society is crucial to democratization because it
enables and widens participation, protects citizens
from the abuse of state power, and guarantees the
political accountability of the state.

CITIZENSHIP
Citizen
A member of a democratic community
who enjoys full civil and political rights and is
accorded protection inside and outside the
territory of the State.
Citizenship
A membership of a citizen in a political society
which membership implies, reciprocally, a duty of
allegiance on the part of the members and duty of
protection on the part of the state.

custom or law as being a legal member of a
sovereign state or belonging to a nation.
Acquisition of Citizenship
 Involuntary method
By birth because of blood relationship (jus sanguinis)
or place of birth (jus soli).

 Voluntary Method
Naturalization is the legal actor process by which a
non-citizen in a country may acquire citizenship or
nationality of a country. It may involve application
approved by legal authorities.
Dual Citizenship
A type of citizenship when a person is a citizen of
two countries at the same time, having legal rights and
obligations in connection with both countries.
