The Problem and its Background

According to widdoson (1979) ,


reading is an interactive process that
goes on between the reader and
texts, resulting in comprehension.
Theoretical Framework

The theory which is relevant to this study


is the "Schemata Theory“ which
specifically focuses on reading
comprehension. It plays an important
role in achieving the objectives of the
study.
According to piaget (1972) and Craing
(1989),Schemata is a term for metal
structures that process information,
perceptions and experience.

 The figure show the variables that affects
the level of reading comprehension skills
and performance in english of the students.
Moreover, this paradigm shows the
relationship between the reading
comprehension skills and their academic
performance in English subject.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aims to find of the senior high


school level of reading comprehension skills and
performance in English.
 Specially this study seeks to answer the
following questions:
 1.What is the profile of the respondents in term of
 1; 1 Age
 1; 2 Sex
 2.What is the academic performance of the
respondent in their English subjects?
 3.What is the level of reading comprehension skills
of the respondents?
 4. Is there a significant difference in the level of
Reading Comprehension Skills of the respondents
across gender?
 5. Is there a significant relationship between the
reading comprehension skills and academic
performance in English subjects of the
respondents?
Significance of the Study

 The result of the study will be beneficial to the


following:
School Administrators - The result of this study
help the administration of Andabuen National High
School to create strategy plans such as program to
make the students improve their reading
comprehension skill and performance in English
encounter as a Senior High School student.
 Teachers- The result of the study helps the
faculty members of Andabuen National High
School campus to identify the factor that
affects the Senior High School students level
of reading comprehension skills and
performance in English and its relationship to
their academic performance, The results of
this study also will be the basis on how they
act and teach toward the student.
 Parents- This study will greatly help the parents on
how to determine their children's in reading
comprehension skill and performance in English and its
relation in their academic performance.
 Students- This study will greatly help especially the
students who will be going to study as a college to
become a good reader and to know how to improve it,
It will give enough knowledge to the students about
the Senior High School students level of reading
comprehension skill and performance in English and its
relationship to the academic performance.
Definition of Terms
 Reading Comprehension- Is the ability to process
text, understand its meanings, and to integrate it with
what the reader already knows.
 Performance- refers to the students grades age in
their English subjects during the previous semester.
 Senior High School- A two years of specialized upper
secondary education; students may choose a
specialization based on aptitude, interest, and school
quality. Each student in senior high school can choose
among three tracks: Academic, Technical- Vocational-
Livelihood, and Sports and Arts.

 40 are chosen to answer the Questionnaire/
Respondent

 Frequency and tally percent , Arithmetic Mean,

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION


Table 1. Frequency of the Age of the
respondents
 Table1 shows the result of the
frequency of the age of the
respondents. It shows that the age of
the respondent is under 16 to 18 years
old. The table shows that majority of
the respondent’s age of 16 than 17 and
18 years of age.

 Table2 shows the result of the frequency of
the gender of the respondents. It shows that
the respondents on this study were 21 female
and 19 male. Has a total of 40 respondent’s.

Table 3 shows the result of the frequency
of the academic performance in English
of the Respondents. It shows that the
grade of the respondent is in a average of
75 to 91 percent.

 Table 5 shows the results of the independent
samples t-test of the respondents’ level of reading
comprehension across their gender. It shows that
there was no significant difference between the
reading comprehension levels of the Grade 11
student across their gender.
 It is similar on the , Cimmitti, Caleb Bartholet
(2013). which shows that there was no significant
difference on the reading ability of the primary
level student across gender.

 Table 6 shows the results of the spearman-
rho correlation coefficient of the
respondent’s level of reading
comprehension. It shows that there is no
significant relationship between the reading
comprehension level of the respondent of
their academic performance in English. The
result of this study was opposed by the study
conducted by Onkoba (2014), which showed
a positive correlation between academic
performance and reading comprehension.
CHAPTER V

SUMMARYOF FINDINGS,
CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary of Findings

 Based from the data collected,


the following findings were
revealed:
1.The age of the respondent’s
The frequency of the age of the respondents. It
shows that the age of the respondent is under 16 to
18 years old. The majority of the respondent’s age
is 16 than 17 and 18 years of age.
2. The gender of the respondent’s
The respondents on this study were 21 female and
19 male. Has a total of 40 respondent’s.
3. Academic performance in English of the respondent’s
The result of the frequency of the academic performance
in English of the Respondents, it shows that the grade of
the respondent is in a average of 75 to 91 percent.
 4.Level of reading comprehension in English of the
respondent’s
The result of mean, std. deviation and description
of reading comprehension level of the respondent’s,
it shows that the overall mean of the reading
comprehension level of the respondents has a 2.57
percent and the Std deviation has a result of .757
percent. The table implies that the overall
comprehension level of the respondents was
satisfactory.
 5. Significant relationship between the reading
comprehension level and academic performance
in English subject of the respondent’s across
gender
The results of the independent samples t-test of
the respondents’ level of reading comprehension
across their gender, it shows that there was no
significant difference between the reading
comprehension levels of the Grade 11 student
across their gender.
 6. Level of Reading Comprehension across Gender of
the respondent’s
 The results of the spearman-rho correlation
coefficient of the respondent’s level of reading
comprehension, it shows that there is no significant
relationship between the reading comprehension
level of the respondent of their academic
performance in English. The result of this study was
opposed by the study conducted by Onkoba (2014),
which showed a positive correlation between
academic performance and reading comprehension.
Conclusions
 1. The reading comprehension level of the respondents
across their gender are shows that there was no
significant difference between the reading
comprehension levels of the Grade 11 student across
their gender.
 2. Generally, the students had a satisfactory and fair
level of reading comprehension in their English subject.
 3. Age and gender didn’t affect the reading
comprehension level of the respondents towards in
English performance.
Recommendations
 1. Teachers should spend enough time in pre-
reading activities because this stage leads to the
success of the stage that follows which are the
reading and post reading stage. When all this is
done by the instructors it will lead to
comprehension and eventually academic success.
 2.The ministry of Education should hold workshops,
focusing on reading comprehension practice to help
teachers deal with reading comprehension.
3. Teachers to instruct the learners on
how to monitor their comprehension
which they will eventually apply as
they sit for examination.
4.Teacher to pursue various methods in
teaching reading process to enhance
the reading comprehension.
 5.The parents should have a strong positive
influence on their children’s reading. Reading
with children can make a measurable difference
in reading comprehension. For intensive reading
parents to buy for the children story book to
enable them improve on their pronunciation,
comprehension abilities and fluency. When
parents get involved in their children’s academic
development will be aware of their reading
difficulties and help them in time.
