VERBAL COMMUNICATION NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Nonverbal communication helps to create your image in others
mind and even you can express your emotions and feelings in
front of others, which you are unable to express in words.

“The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't

being said.”

Peter F. Drucker

SUMMARY

Sometimes people don’t know what they convey

through their body language and use wrong
pronunciations , hence convey wrong message
unintentionally . Thus they should know and
understand what the components of non verbal
communication mean .
WHAT IS CHRONEMICS?
Chronemics is the study of the
role of time in communication.

It can be defined as
“the interrelated observations
and theories of man’s use of time
as a specialized elaboration of
culture” - the way in which one
perceives and values time, structures
time, and reacts to time frames
communication
• Power/Status- Time can be used as an indicator of status. For example,in most
companies the boss can interrupt progress to hold an impromptu meeting in the middle of the
work day, yet the average worker would have to make an appointment to
see the boss

• Cultural Norms- In Anerican culture we have a more strict understanding of

time, meaning that if we set a work meeting for 10am, it would be extremely rude
to arrive 15 minutes late, whereas in India, asian countries or latin American
countries arriving late would be quite normal, even expected.

• Expectations- expecting from a teacher to finish her/his class before scheduled time.
• Interpersonal Priorities- being late for a date for a female
A monochronic time system
means that things are done one at
a time and time is segmented into
precise, small units. Under this
system time is scheduled,
arranged and managed.

Example: Concentrating on study

only while sitting inside
classroom.
* A polychronic time system is a
system where several things can
be done at once, and a more fluid
approach is taken to scheduling
time.

* Examples of polychronic behaviors

include: browsing the internet
and texting to gf while attending
the business communication class.
* Regulating interaction
* Expressing intimacy
* Affect management
* Evoking emotion
* Facilitating service and task goals
What is Haptics

Haptics is related to sense of touch which comes from the

Greek word HAPTESTHAI

To grasp or to touch.

Touch is the first language.

From a very early age we become sensitive to the specific

qualities of touch rather than its mere presence or absence.
Touch in animals
Gentling
Licking
Touch in Humans
Professional-Functional-Touch
Social Touch
Proxemics is the study of the
ways in which space is
interpreted in communication

The word ‘space’ here signifies

the distance between the
sender and the receiver.
• Very close contact is maintained
within the space of 18 inches.

• Communication is often in
whispers or at a low pitch.

• Suitable for highly confidential

talks and decisions concerning
sensitive matters.

• Handshake, a pat on the back,

eye contact, etc. are very
commonly used in this space.
• Personal space extends from
18 inches to 4 feet.

• Communication in this space

is also largely personal in
nature.

• Generally relaxed and casual

mode of communication.
• Social space extends from 4 feet to
12 feet.

• This space is used mostly for

formal and official relationships.

• Communications in social space are

dominated by reason and planning
rather than by emotions and
feelings.
This larger area extends
beyond 12 feet.

Communication in this space

is highly formal and objective.

Public address system may

have to be used in case the
space extends as far as we
can see.
• Fixed spaces refer to permanent features like room
sizes, walls, building and its total capacity, corners,
etc.

• The permanent features determine who interacts with

whom, how and for what purpose.

• In semi-fixed space the physical features are

changeable and can be rearranged.
Artifacts are forms of decorative ornamentation that are chosen
to represent self-concept.
From clothes to cars, watches, briefcases, purses, and even
eyeglasses, what we choose to surround ourselves with
communicates something about our sense of self.
