FUEL METERING

SYSTEM
(Reciprocating
Engine)
What is a system?

• a set of things working

together as parts of a
mechanism or an
interconnecting network
The primary purpose of aircraft
fuel system is to store and deliver
fuel to the engines.
Aircraft Fuel
System On the other hand, aircraft's fuel
delivery system must supply fuel to
a fuel metering device in the
proper quantity while maintaining
the quality of the fuel.
FUEL METERING
SYSTEM

• primary purpose of a fuel

metering system is to blend
the fuel and air needed for
combustion.
Carburetion Principles

“as the velocity of a

gas or liquid
Basic law of physics
increases, the
pressure decreases”
As shown in Figure 2-4, simple venturi is a
passageway or tube in which there is a narrow
portion called the throat.

Venturi Principle to

Mixture Control

Throttle Control
Carburetor
• Carburetor – a device in an internal combustion engine for mixing air with
a fine spray of liquid fuel

• Mixture Control – set’s the amount of fuel added to the intake airflow.

• Throttle Control – restricts flow of fuel-air mixture in the engine and is

therefore the main control of engine power.

• Intake Manifold – is a component that delivers either air or an air/fuel

mixture to the cylinders.
1. Air rushes through the carburetor and intake manifold to the
cylinder to replace the air displaced by the piston as it moved down on
the intake stroke.
2. Due to this low pressure area caused by the piston moving down, the
higher pressure air in the atmosphere flows in to fill the low pressure
area.
3. As it does, the airflow must pass through the carburetor venturi.
4. The throttle valve is located between the venturi and the engine.
Mechanical linkage connects this valve with the throttle lever in the
cockpit.
5. By means of the throttle, airflow to the cylinders is regulated and
controls the power output of the engine
