Description of project.
• The project is about a hotel. They used adjacent land to Colombo-
Galle road.
• The propose hotel is consisting
• Main hotel complex of 120 room
• Swimming pool
• Large golf course
• Herbal treatment center
• Water treatment plant
• Boat yard
• Tennis court
Proposed Plan
Existing Environment
• The chosen land located near the Galle – Colombo main road.
• There is a river across the considered land.
• There are some shrubs and small trees on the outfall area of the river.
• There are private owned coconut lands beside the two sides of the river
to use in toddy tapping.
• A boat yard of consisting 20 boats and 15 fishing houses are in fishing
village.
• 4ft wide gravel foot path is locating through the fishing village to the boat
yard.
• State owned abandoned scrub land is located in upper left boundary of
the coconut land at slats land.
Geology.
• Soils in this area.
• In the coconut lands - sandy loam or alluvial soil types.
• In the mangroves - marshy soil.
• Near the sea - sandy soil.

Hydrology
• River through the considering land. So that ground water may
available there. Sea is near to that area, so that water is little salty.
• Water requirement per person for one day will be 45 l/day per person.
• All the garbage and other waste will come to this area. So that people
can’t use river water for domestic purposes. They can use water only
for other purposes. Like purification plant.
• In this environment there only live fishing people. There job is fishing.
There having fishing industry.
Ecological Resources
The proposed exploration area is rich in biodiversity and several important
biologically. Natural wetland ecosystems in this area include rivers, mangrove,
sea grass beds, coral reefs, saltmarsh, seashore, scrub land and coconut land . A
description of some of the biology of the area follows

•Mangroves
As in many other mangroves in the dry coastal regions in Sri Lanka Rhizophora
mucronata and Avicennia marina are the major species of the mangroves in this
mangroves area. A total of 14 exclusive mangrove species and 29 species of
mangrove associated species have been reported from this area. Among them
Scyphihora hydrophyllacea is a very
rare species.
•Sea grass
Sea grass habitats are considered to be among the most productive submerged systems. This
productivity supports through dependent species of epiphytes fauna, large number of fish which
area important in lagoon and coastal fisheries. Through their high productivity, sea grasses build
up large carbon reserves which are utilized in the tropics by herbivores such as turtles, birds and
marine mammals. Many species of prawns and fish use the sea grass meadows as nurseries and
even as adults are dependent on sea grasses for the food via the epiphytic community.

•Birds
The north western coast of Sri Lanka is an important area for birds, specially for the migratory
species. Many sea birds and water birds are resident in the same area. The islands in the lagoons
provide breeding and roosting sites for many resident bird species.
•Turtles
Turtles are believed to have a life-span greater than 80 years. Most of the species are highly
migratory, moving between nesting and feeding grounds, which can be thousands of kilometres
apart. Out of a total of seven living species of turtles in the world, five are reported to nest along
the coastal belt of Sri Lanka namely; Loggerhead , Green turtle, Olive Ridley, Leatherback and
Hawksbill turtle

•Reef fish
The reefs in the area have high species diversity of reef fish. More than 400 species of reef
in 57 families have been recorded for the Bar Reef.
Historical and Archeological significant
sites
In this area there are no any significant sites and importance.
Social And Economic Aspects
• Most of the people living here are having low income.
• Income based on natural resources. Eg:coconut, sea

Main form of live hoods are

• Fishing industry
• Coconut husk industry
• Toddy tapping
• Boutique
Anticipated Environmental Impacts.
1. Impacts of earth surface
• Vegetation clearance, road construction, excavation
work will expose soil in the affected project area.
2. Impact of sewage, waster oil spills, surface runoff, waste
water disposal on the environment.
• Construction of hotel, recreation and other facilities
often leads to increased sewage pollution.
• Sewage runoff cause serious damage of coral reefs
• Damaging the flora and fauna
3. Anticipated problem related to solid waste disposal
• Solid waste generated during site preparation and
construction work would include cut vegetation and typical
construction waste. ( insulation, nails, electrical wiring,
rebar, wood, plaster, scrap metal, steel, cement, and bricks.)
4. Impacts related to the noise generation
• Noise generation due to construction activities
• The use of heavy equipment during site clearance and
construction.
5. Impacts on coastal flora and fauna
• The main disturbance for this process is the motor boats
which are used for tourist activities. People use
speedy glass bottom boats for watch corals. This
incident is a reason for make danger rare fish species who
lived in coral reefs.

6. Air pollution
• Dust emission from site preparation, excavation, material
handling and other activities.
• Cleared vegetation burnt onside would generated smoke

7. Impacts to present beach users

• Losing their habitats
• Collapsing villager’s occupation
• Changing the life style
8. Sociological and economic impacts
• Increase job opportunity
• Better social infrastructure such as better connectivity
• Economy related to semi-skilled expected to boom
• The proposed project would result in the escalation of the prices
of land in the nearby area.
• Contribution to government revenues
Mitigratory Measures.
1. Waste water flow
• provide drainage structure
• Install pumping facilities
• Install treatment plant for waste water treatment
• Prevent agricultural land drainage from reaching surface
water
2. Soil erosion
• Provide a sand river bank structure
• Growing grass on sand/corrosion area
• Covering the piles of soil
3. Noise generation due to construction activities
• Properly certified, tested and calibrated equipment will be
used
• Ear plugs provided to workers
• Proper engineering control measures will be taken
• At design stage procurement of low noise equipment will be
ensured

4. Pollution in coastal area

• Water purification
• Garbage recycling
Monitoring Programme
Parameters to be monitored
 Air quality
 Water quality
 Noise level.
 Solid Waste Management
 Soil condition in construction area
Responsible agencies
• Ministry for the Environment
• Environmental Protection Authority
• Tourist board – Sri Lanka
• Department of Conservation
• Central environmental authority
• Human resource and human development authority
Environment Impact Assessment is a very beneficial
step to check, whether the project is environmental friendly or not.
The finding of this EIA have provided information of the nature and
extent of environmental impacts arising from the, “ Hotel
Construction ”. The existing environmental conditions have been
identified through onsite survey. The environmental impacts on air
quality (dust), noise, water quality, fisheries, waste and during
construction and operational phases of this Project were identified,
assessed and evaluated in this EIA Report.
Major construction impact will be elevation in
suspended solids during dredging works and noise from pipe laying
work along the narrow alley between residences. However,
dredging works will be confined within cofferdam. Noise impacts
are usually short term and no noise exceedance is expected with
proper implementation of mitigation measures. A number of
measures are proposed to avoid emergency discharge of raw
sewage in case the sewage treatment plant fails to operate.
