What is matter?

What are the three states of

matter?
You will be given materials to observe.
Identify its physical properties. After that
you pass it to another table, until you finish
observing all 3 trays with materials on it.
The following are the physical
characteristics of a matter:
Hardness, malleability and
Brittleness
What materials did you manipulate in Tray
1?
What property was being observed?
When you pressed or dropped the
materials in Tray 2, what happened to
them?
What property was being shown by
those materials?

What characteristics do they

Describe the materials in tray 3? What
happened when you pound them?

What property do the materials

have?
What are the different
properties of solid
materials that you have
learned?
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MATTER
MATTER – it is anything that occupy space and has mass and volume.
The three phases / state of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
Physical property - a characteristic of a material that can be readily
observed without changing its composition.
1. Hardness is the property of an object that makes it withstand pressure.
Examples are metals, wood, and stones
2. Brittleness refers to the ability of an object to be easily broken or
crushed into pieces. Examples are glass wares, floral foam, chalk,
eggshells
3. Malleability – ability of an object to be hammered into
flat sheets . Examples are bottle cap, gold, aluminum
and silver
