Cross Culture Communication
• Culture is the “lens” through which you view the world.
• It is central to what you see,
• How you make sense of what you see,
• How you express yourself.
• Cross culture communication is the process of sending and receiving
messages between people that can be Verbal and Non Verbal signs
differently.
Why Cross Culture Communication is
Important?
• Globalization: Cross border movement of people, goods and data
brings more and more cultures into contact with one another and
increases the potential of cross culture communication.
• Business Opportunities
• Job Opportunities
• Sharing of views and ideas
• Talent Improvisation
• Understanding of diverse market.
Barriers to Cross Cultural Communication
• Ethnocentrism : Inability to accept another culture’s world view “my
way is the best.”
• Stereotyping: Generalizing about a person while ignoring presence of
individual difference. “ In India, all marriage arranged by the Indian
Parents.”
• Language Barrier : People prefer the language in which they are
comfortable.
• Prejudice : People have preconceived idea about people from another
culture. “ after 9/11, people with muslim names were subjected to
intensive interrogation”.
• Bias : Bias for something is a preference.Bias against something is
negative attitude. “Manager biased towards employees from their
own culture”
• Discrimination : When prejudices and biases are acted on,
discrimination is being shown. “when indviduals from diff. culture are
hated by other people because of diff. lifestyle.”
