GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING Turning Movement Count and Vehicle Distribution GROUP G03
Presentor: PATRICK ALFRED
INTRODUCTION Assignment was about traffic queue at the beginning and the end of the traffic count and its distribution to respective movements. THE STUDY AREA The turning movement count study was at Bamaga (T- intersection); that involved classified traffic count of vehicles in all directions with consideration of off-peak and peak hours. Traffic count during peak hour is used for design and operation analysis since there is great variation of traffic during the day. . PHASE SYSTEM Represents the fundamental method by which a traffic signal accommodates the various users at an intersection in a safe and efficient manner. The junction has three phase system as illustrated below From collected Data. OFF-PEAK HOUR: PASSENGER CARS Left turn Through Start Time TOTAL TOTAL 02:00 PM 127 193 02:15 PM 122 152 02:30 PM 127 217 02:45 PM 123 221 03:00 PM 127 185 03:15 PM 125 211 03:30 PM 114 172 03:45 PM 95 171 PEAK HOUR: PASSANGER CARS Left turn Through
Start Time TOTAL TOTAL
04:30 PM 127 180 04:45 PM 130 161 05:00 PM 136 185 05:15 PM 152 136 05:30 PM 121 175 05:45 PM 136 180 06:00 PM 126 150 06:15 PM 169 150 Imagine at the beginning of the traffic count there were 30 vehicles in the queue. The vehicles were there before counting started, during counting you must count those vehicles. At the end of your counting time there were 50 vehicles in the queue. If those 30 vehicles were not there at the beginning there would be 20 vehicles in the queue. HOW TO DISTRIBUTE THESE 20 VEHICLES IN BOTH MOVEMENTS? From data collected above calculated directional distribution was about 45% left turn and 55% through Movements respectively. Therefore 45% of 20 vehicles is about 9 vehicles, 9 vehicles will turn left. And 55% of 20 Vehicles is about 11 vehicles, 11 vehicles will move through.
