“You are the new principal of ABC Elementary School. You
have the best idea that will increase student achievement, minimize disruptive behaviors, involve parents, and improve attendance. Your staff is split – half are open-minded, high achieving, student first go-getters and your other half are fixed-mindset, averse to change, and generally negative veteran staff. What will your strategy be to implement your idea?” How to implement PBIS in a school where staff is split – half are open-minded, high achieving, student first go- getters and your other half are fixed-mindset, averse to change, and generally negative. Implementation steps- - Survey - Form a committee - Professional Development - Progress Monitoring - Communicate - Celebrate Survey Surveying the staff will allow you to see who has experience and knowledge on the subject and what type of professional development would best fit the needs of the staff. - create the survey - administer during staff meeting - as an introduction to the survey, I will have a snow ball activity. Form the Committee Forming a committee of staff members that volunteer to serve the school gives the staff members ownership and keep them involved. - the committee should be volunteers - the committee should include a parent volunteer - the committee will have the responsibility of introducing the initiative - it will consist on a chair and co chair to lead - the committee will set goals for the school Professional Development
Professional development is an important part of the implementation
as it gives the teachers that have little experience with PBIS the knowledge base to go forward and the experienced teachers the updated information they need to help grow the program. - PD needs to be up to date - PD should support teachers Progress Monitoring
The implementation of PBIS needs to monitored. This monitoring
shows us the successes, progressions and complications. - Progress Monitoring will show growth - Progress Monitoring will give us data to see if goals have been reached - The growth and success will show staff the effectiveness of the program This will answer the question why we need to do this Communicate Communication needs to be consistent and honest. Open two way communication, between the leadership and staff is imperative to the implementation of the program so all that are vested will know the progress. - staff will receive regular updates - parents will receive regular updates - communication must be open and honest Celebrate Successes of the program are an important part of the growth. These successes will help those that are unsure of the effectiveness of the program see that it can and will work for them. - share successes - display progress - celebrate growth
