You cannot

not
communicate.
Communication is essential to human life.
Without it, we cannot function properly. One of
the primary ways we communicate is through
oral communication. This includes language.
We use language for many reasons and in
many ways.
Understanding communication, particularly oral
communication, helps us become competent
communicators.
As a future professional, you will engage in
both formal and informal interactions
with various people. In each of these
interactions, you will have to use skills to
build rapport with all sorts of people.
Moreover, you are expected not only to be
skilled in your chosen field, but also to be
competent as a communicator. You are
expected to express yourself clearly and
effectively and to interact appropriately
with different people according to the
situation.
It is not enough that you know a
language as there is more to
language than just being able to
speak it.
It is important to know when, where,
and with whom to use specific
language efficiently and
appropriately.
Even before we were born, we were already
communicating. Interaction is not possible
without communication. We did not have to
be taught to communicate, nor were we
taught the nature, types, and elements of
communication, yet we communicate like we
breathe.
We did not need to learn about these, but we
CAN communicate.

So why do we need to study and learn about

communication now?
Communication
 from the Latin word “communis”

meaning common.

You can define it as reaching out in order

to share something in common.

It is an active process wherein a speaker

transmits a message through a
channel to a listener.
Communication
 is the transmission and reception of
information between a human source
(encoder) and receiver (decoder)
using a signaling system. (Blackburn)
Communication
 refers to the transmission of information
(message) between a source and receiver using a
signaling system:
in linguistic contexts, source and receiver are
interpreted in human terms, the system involved
is language, and the notion of response to (or
acknowledgment of) the message becomes of
crucial importance.
In theory, communication is said to have taken
place if the information received is the
same as that sent.
The Communication Process:
An Overview
The Communication Process
Communication is the process of expressing and
exchanging information, thoughts, ideas, and
feelings.
Since communication is a process, it involves a
series of actions that lead to a particular result
such as passing on of a message and an
exchange of ideas among others
In theory, communication is said to have taken
place if the information received is the same
as that sent.
In very simple terms, the communication process
happens this way:
1. In a given context, the sender converts his or her
thoughts into signals such as words.
2. The sender sends the signals (speaks) through a
channel (such as air).
3. As the signals are sent through the channel,
there is/are some noise (anything that reduces
the quality of the signals such that words cannot
be heard clearly)
4. The receiver hears the signals.
5. The receiver converts the signals into thoughts.
6. The receiver sends feedback by becoming the
sender.
The following are examples of
communication situations:
• A professor delivering a lecture to her
students
• A coach talking to his players
• A parent giving advice to his/her child
• A salesperson presenting the product to
a customer
What are other communication
situations that you can, and have
observed?
Why do you consider it as a
communication situation?
