COOPERATIVE
LEARNING
Learners enjoy what they are
doing inside the mathematics
classroom.
Cooperative Learning

• a method or an educational format that is

useful in many strategies in teaching
mathematics.

• In this format, students work together in small

mixed ability groups to achieve a particular
goal or to complete an academic task.
Cooperative Learning serves the
following purposes:

To increase
achievement
through group
collaboration

To provide an
alternative to the

by promoting
interdependent activities.
Cooperative Learning is appropriate to use

Advantages of Cooperative Learning
It is essential to promote students’
problem solving competency
Ability to communicate and reason
mathematically
Social skills
 Develop the ability to perceive the
value of mathematical thinking and
knowledge of how to apply
mathematics to new and real life
situations.
Roles of the Teacher

Role in Implementing Cooperative
Learning
1. The teacher must act as both academic and
classroom manager.
2. The teacher specifies both academic and social
skills to be developed in planning the lessons.
3. The teacher should observe each group to see
their successes and their failures.
Rules to follow:
Group may seek help if they have same question to
solve.
The correct answer is not given but help will be given
to get the answer.

Cooperative Learning Models
by Dr. Stephen Kagan
• Divide the class in pairs.
• Make two pairs form a group of four.
• The 4 members are numbered 1-4.
• The group will choose a name for their team.
• The names are written on 2 cm x 4 cm strips of
cardboard and place it in a small box.
• On 3” x 4” pieces of cardboard the teacher
writes 1-4
• At the end of the seatwork the teacher
puts the cards face downward on the
table
• The teacher then picks a team name and
announces the number that was picked.
Different Formats of
Cooperative Learning

• Pair-Share
• Think-Pair-Share
• Pair Check (Tutor-Tutee)
• Pairs Square
• Pair Share

- Students work in pairs in solving

exercises and problems. Partners may solve
individually but must compare their answers.
•Think, Pair, Share
Think Pair Share

Teacher asks question and says “Think”

everybody think of the answer mentally. When the
teacher says “Pair”, partners will compare their
answers. When the teacher says “Share”, he/she
picks one of the 4 numbers and a team name.
Pairs Check

- Partners act as tutor or tutee in

answering problems.
Pairs Square

- The team of 4 works together on

more difficult exercises / problems or on
homework.
Some Points to Remember
1. The teacher must promote interdependent
work and insure that no single student does
all work.
2. Students must be guided to learn
interpersonal and small group skills.
3. Students should, now and then, reflect on
how well the group is functioning.
4. To make a students think, during the group
work, teacher must ask questions like “What
are you doing?”, etc.
Learning Mathematics
can be fun!
Learners’ wish list of teacher
characteristics
Their Mathematics teachers
- have mastery of the subject matter
- are more understanding
- use different strategies of teaching
- use the latest tools of technology
- are more caring
- have sense of humor
- can communicate effectively
How else can teachers
motivate learners?
Mathematics teachers
need to….
inspire their
students to learn.
Thank you and be
inspired to
