• Social – pursuit of pleasure
• Economic – pursuit of profit
• Political – pursuit of power

• Standard definition of politics includes essential elements:
– power, rule, authority, influence, and the manner in
which all are acquired and exercised.

• Study of power and the powerful, of influence and the


influential, of rulers and the ruled, and of authority and the
authoritative (Dannug, 2005)

– Personal
– Organizational

• Politics
– The science of government and the art on practice of
administering public affairs (Black’s Law Dictionary).

– Means by w/c the will of the community is arrived at and


implemented

• Politics
– By nature, politics everywhere involves conflict – some form of
struggle among people trying to achieve different goals and
satisfy opposing interest.

– The pursuit and exercise of political power necessary to make


binding policy decisions for the community and to distribute
patronage and other governmental benefits.

• How is governance related to politics?
– “Exercise of political, economic, and administrative authority in
the management of a country’s affairs at all levels.” (UNDP)

– “Regularized management of the political, socio-cultural,


economic, technological, demographic, ecological, and
institutional needs and interests of all social forces to ensure
balance and fairness in the realization of certain needs.”
(Dannug, 2005)

• Political Science
– “polis” (city or sovereign state), “scire” (science)

– A branch of social science that deals with theory, organization,


government, and practice of the state (Rodee, 1980).

– Deals with those relations among men and groups, w/c are
subject to control by the state, and w/ relations of the state to
other states.

– Deals with entire body of doctrines relating to origin, for,
behavior, and purposes of state

– A law that deals w/ the:
• Organization of the governments
• Limitations upon government authority
• Powers and duties of governmental offices and officers
• Obligations of one state to another

– Subdivisions: constitutional law, administrative law,


international law

–Focuses upon the methods and techniques used in actual
management of state affairs by the 3 branches of government
including all governmental offices whose function is to deliver
services to its people.

who are his representatives, among others.

4. Enables every Filipino to discharge and exercise more
intelligently and more efficiently his duties as a citizen.

5. Knowledge in PolSci constitute a particularly useful


equipment for the Filipinos who desires to participate
effectively and usefully in our political growth and
