MS Physics (Weekend)
Nano-Particles
 Nano-particle size is one billionth of a meter.
 Materials exhibit unique properties at Nano scale.
 The change in properties is due to increase in surface area and
dominance of quantum effects associated with small size and
large surface area to volume ratio.
 e.g. Gold color, Silicon band gap etc.
Nano Material Metal Sulphide
 Photo catalyst

 Solar Cells
 LEDs

 Sensors

 Thermoelectric
devices

 Li-Ion batteries

 Fuel Cells
 Magnetic devices
Cobalt(II) sulphide (CoS)
 Cobalt sulfides form a group of II–IV semiconductor
materials
 Considerable application for electronic devices
 solar energy as absorbers
 ultra-high-density magnetic recording
 laser and field emission
application
 anodes for Li-ion batteries
 catalysts for
hydrodesulphurization
Cu doped CoS
 Copper doping make ZnS a very good UV filter.

 Copper doped ZnS provide many active sites for

photo catalyst

 Pure ZnS showed blue emission while Cu doped ZnS

shifted blue emission towards green

 Photoactivity of Cu doped ZnS shell was 6 to 130

times higher than pure ZnS
Methodology
 Sol-gel Auto-combustion

 Aerosol method

 Hydro-thermal process

 Solid state reaction method

Co-precipitation technique
Why Co-Precipitation Method?

High reactive
Sharp particle size
Good control
High Homogeneity
Large purity and Calcinations
Versatile
Methodology
Preparation of 0.25M solution of CoCl2
Preparation of 0.25M solution of CuCl2
Preparation of 0.25M solution of Na2S
For Undoped CoS, Drop wise add Na2S in CoCl2
solution with continuous stirring.
For Cu doped CoS, prepare 1% CuCl2 and CoCl2 solution by
adding 1mL of CuCl2 solution in 99mL of CoCl2 solution.
Drop wise add Na2S solution in 1% CuCl2-CoCl2 solution with
continuous stirrer.
Heat the resultant solution up to 100C with continuous stirrer
for 90mins.
Let the solution to be cooled to room temperature.
Wash sample with ethanol and Distilled water.
All others sample i.e. 5%,10% and 15% prepared in the
same fashion and capsulated for characterization.
Characterization

XRD: Gives phase nature, crystal structure and morphology

SEM: give information about Crystallinity, composition and size

of NCs.

UV spectroscopy: To study the Optical properties

Raman Spectroscopy: To find out defect contents

Expected Results

 Structural property of CoS will study due to Cu doping.

 Electrical properties are expected to be increased due to

Cu doping

 Optical properties of CoS expected to be increased owing

to Cu doping
