INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAMME


OBJECTIVE

To provide Supervisors at the declines with a system designed to prevent injuries, sub - standard
work and give recognition to best performing teams on a monthly basis.
(This program runs in conjunction with the monthly physical program).

MEASUREMENTS :

1. Each operation in the section has standards and regulations which must be adhered to, these
are enforced ?

2. Each task performed requires certain tools and equipment, the requirements are available
and in use ?

3. The method of doing each task has been communicated, trained and followed ?

4. The precautions required prior to, during and after task performance are adhered to ?

5. The personal protective equipment to protect persons from harm are available and in use ?

METHOD :

1. Each working area where teams are working will be evaluated by the specific Supervisors
during the first three weeks of the month.

2. Each Shift Supervisor / Foreman will ensure that all planned working areas and all planned
teams are visited during the audit period. (First three weeks).

3. The audit team will consist of the Shift Supervisor / Shaft Foreman, the Ganger /
Timberman,the Crew Supervisor.

4. Working place per team will be audited and Supervisor will give each working place / teams
results to Mine Overseer.

5. After the Mine Overseer’s rating is complete the mining panel / development / construction
team will be selected. In the event of dispute the Safety Department and Section Manager
will visit team / panel / working place underground and select the monthly winner.

6. Check lists will encompass all tasks, tools, equipment, safety precautions, standards and
regulations, and results achieved.

7. The winning team will be announced at all the meetings underground and on surface during
the week after measuring day. Reasons why other teams were not successful will be
communicated at the Supervisor, Crew Supervisors meeting on the day after measuring.
(Team Supervisors and Crew Supervisors will inform each end / panel / construction team
of deviations and short comings ).

REWARD :

1. The team with the highest overall score for stoping / panel / development ends and
construction site will for first win have a braai at Team Supervisor, Crew Supervisor, Shift
Supervisor, Ganger’s meeting the day after measuring day.

2. For the second time each team will have a braai at the same meeting and be presented with
a cap.

3. Third time winners will be presented with silver safety hard hats - known as “Platinum
Safety Team Hat”. (This hat must be a sought after possession).

4. For every win after third time a stick - on star will be awarded to be pasted onto the hat.
Once ten have been accumulated, the winner will be awarded R100 - 00.

5. The Mine Overseer with the assistance of the TM 3 clerk will keep a record book depicting
all winners.

CONTROL :

1. The Safety Officer and Clerk will keep records of system for reference and checking.

2. Random audits will be performed by the safety and service departments and any discrepancy
of more than 10% will lead to teams disqualification for the month.

3. The Safety Officer will attend the monthly meeting and at least one Shift Supervisor
underground meeting fortnightly.

4. During routine visits to work sites team members will be questioned on monthly audit to
ensure that all are involved.

5. The system will be terminated if the desired results are not evident by the Section Manager.
