CHAPTER NO. 15

WIRELESS LANs
INDEX
This chapter is divided into three sections
 First Section
Introduces the general issues behind Wireless LANs and compare wired
and wireless LANs
 Second Section
Include Wireless LANs defined by IEEE 802.11 Project
Architechture of LANs
MAC Sublayer
 Third Section
Include Bluetooth Technology
WIRELESS LANs

DEFINITION:
“The process of sharing data or information by
using radio waves , called, Wireless LANs”

TYPES OF WIRELESS LANs:

1. Wireless Ethernet
2. Bluetooth Technology

ACCESS CONTROL

Most important issue we need to discuss in wireless LANs is

access control ….How a wireless host can get a access to the
shared medium(air).
CSMA/CD is used in wired LANs, but it is not applicable in
Wireless LANs due to three reasons.
1. Detection of collision
2. Hidden station problem
3. Distance between stations
IEEE 802.11 PROJECT
IEEE has defined the specification for a wireless LAN , called 802.11 or wireless
Ethernet.
 It covers physical and data link layer.
 It defines two kinds of services.

ARCHITECHTURE OF SERVICES
1. Basic Service Set:
It is made up of stationary or mobile wireless stations and optional
central base station, called, ACCESS POINT.
2. Extended Service Set:
It is made up of two or more BSS with Aps.
MAC Sublayer

 It provides flow of control and multiplexing for the transmission medium.

 It has two sublayers, one is LLC and second is Physical layer.
 DCF and PCF shows the relationship between LLC and PHYSICAL layers.

DISTRIBUTED COORDINATION FUNCTION

 It uses CSMA/CA as access method.

POINT COORDINATION FUNCTION

 It is an optional access method that can be implemented in infrastructure
method.
