CELL THEORY

Ms. Mary Rose E. Ariola

Learning Targets
• Trace the development of the cell theory
• Recognize the personalities behind the
development of the cell
• Explain the postulates of the cell theory
• Explain the role of the microscope in the
development of cell biology
Theory of Spontaneous
Generation
or
Abiogenesis
Theory of Spontaneous Generation
or Abiogenesis
• Proposed by Aristotle (Father of Biology)
• From pre-historic times to around 1850, most
people believed that under the right conditions
living things could spontaneously appear from
non-living material.
• People believed that mice could created
spontaneously by putting grain in the dark quiet
place and leaving it for weeks.
Francesco Redi
• Born in Italy
• First to challenge the
idea of spontaneous
generation.
• He did not accept that
flies magically appeared
from rotting meat.
Lazzaro Spallanzani
• Italian physiologist
• His investigations into
the development of
microscopic life in
nutrient culture
solutions paved the
way for the research of
Louis Pasteur.
Louis Pasteur
• French chemist and
microbiologist
• Discovered that
microorganisms cause
fermentation and disease
• Developed the process of
pasteurization and
vaccines againsts rabies
Postulates of the Cell Theory
#1: The cell is the
basic unit of life.
#1: All living
organisms are
composed of
cells.
#1: All cells come
from pre-
existing cells.
Postulates of the Cell Theory
1. The cell is the basic unit of life.
2. All living organisms are composed of cells.
3. New cells are created from pre-existing cells.
Development of Cell Theory
Year Scientist
1590 Zacharias Janssen invented the
primitive microscope
1663-1665 Robert Hooke viewed a thin slice of
cork and called it cells.
1665-1676 Marcelo Malpighi and Nehemiah
Grew determined the presence of
organelles in cells.
Year Scientist
1670-1683 Anton van Leeuwenhoek upgraded
Janssen’s microscope that could
magnify up to 270x.
1831 Scottish botanist Robert Brownmade
a breakthrough in the history of
biology by discovering the nucleus.
1838 Matthias Schleiden proposed that
different structures of plants are
composed of cells.
1839 Theodore Schwann declared that
animals are composed of cells.
Year Scientist
1840 Albrecht von Roelliker sperm and egg
cells are composed of cells.
1849 Louis Pasteur dev eloped
fermentation.
1858 Rudolf Virchow completed the cell
theory.
