“ IT BEGINS WITH THE NATURAL FEELING THAT

ONE WANTS TO SERVE, TO SERVE FIRST.

THEN CONSCIOUS CHOICE BRINGS ONE

TO ASPIRE TO LEAD.
“ I HAVE LEARNED OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT KNOWING
AND BELIEVING IN SOME PRINCIPLES DOES NOT MAKE ONE AN
EXPERT PRACTITIONER. REFLECTING ON THESE EXPERIENCES, I
CAME TO REALIZE THAT I WAS ONLY AT THE BEGINNING OF A
SERVANT-LEADING JOURNEY, AND I FELT MUCH MORE

COMFORTABLE ACKNOWLEDGING THAT I WAS ACTUALLY
A SERVANT-LEADER IN TRAINING.

“Leaders are made, not born. Each of us contains the capacity for leadership.”

-Warren Bennis
(Sipe & Frick 2009, p. xi)
Greenleaf (2002) suggested that we are facing a crisis in leadership and
contended that “there is no surer way to guarantee the future than to
have strong ethical leaders in the making now” (p. 214).

“Caring for persons, the more able and the less able serving each other,
is the rock upon which a good society is built.”
(Greenleaf, 2002, p. 62)

“If a better society is to be built, one that is more just and more
loving,” we must “raise both the capacity to serve and the very
performance as servant of existing major institutions by new
regenerative forces operating within them.”
(Greenleaf, 2002, p. 62)

THE BEST TEST, AND DIFFICULT TO ADMINISTER, IS
THIS: DO THOSE SERVED GROW AS PERSONS? DO
THEY, WHILE BEING SERVED, BECOME HEALTHIER,
WISER, FREER, MORE AUTONOMOUS, MORE LIKELY
THEMSELVES TO BECOME SERVANTS? AND, WHAT IS
THE EFFECT ON THE LEAST PRIVILEGED IN SOCIETY?
WILL THEY BENEFIT OR AT LEAST ”
NOT BE FURTHER DEPRIVED?

LEADER MAKES IS THE CHOICE TO SERVE,
WITHOUT WHICH ONE’S CAPACITY TO LEAD IS

NOT IN SEEKING NEW LANDSCAPES,
BUT IN HAVING NEW EYES.
