PSCAD TRAINING

SIMPLE AC SYSTEMS
We will learn:
• Identifying various AC systems and using them in various
cases.
• How to add controls and meters.
• Fly-by windows.
• Multimeter.
• Online frequency scanner.
• Adding polymeters.
• Adding a sequence of events.
• Creating a page module.
• Data merge.
• Radio links.
• The various types of AC systems can be
classified as:
1. Single-phase AC systems
2. Three-phase AC systems, etc

• These can be easily available at master library

sources.

SINGLE-PHASE AC SYSTEMS THREE-PHASE AC SYSTEMS

Adding Controls and Meters
• In-order to make any source externally controllable,
we may use a slider or a meter.
• These can be easily added by following these steps:
Graphs/Meters/Controls Add as Control.
• Add a Control Panel from the Component window
and select Paste option, to add the slider or meter as a
control.
• Generally a slider or meter provides a Three-phase
source RMS voltage as output.
Fly-by Window
• To check what output a particular component can provide us
without checking its properties can be achieved by simply
placing the pointer over the particular component and leave the
mouse stationary.
• A window appears with all the details, which is called a fly-by
window.
• Thus all the preliminary information can be obtained regarding a
component by a fly-by window.
Multimeter

• This component is available on the master library Meters

section or can be found on the Component Panel.
• The metering components take electrical signals as input and
convert them into data signals.
• The multimeter should be connected in series as we do for an
ammeter.
• It is more convenient as compared to other meters, as all are
combined in one.
ASSIGNMENT-I
• Construct the given figure. Control the voltage in a
range of 0 to 20 and set its initial value by 14.4.
• Construct a 3-phase breaker circuit with a timed
controlled logic block to control the breaker at a
specific time.(1 for operation, initially closed and will
open at 0.4sec)
• Initiate a fault in the circuit by a timed fault logic
block . Initiate fault at 0.1 sec and duration of 0.2 sec.
• Add a dial to the system to find the responses at
various fault conditions.
On-line Frequency Scanner
• This block is used when we want to monitor the harmonic
currents flowing through the breaker during each fault.
• This scanner is basically an array of harmonic currents which
can be given as inputs through a Polymeter.
• To add Polymeter: Graphs/Meters… Add as polymeter on
the output channel of the desired harmonic current.

ON-LINE FREQUENCY SCANNER

ASSIGNMENT-II
• Add the polymeter and on-line frequency meter to the existing
case.
• Obtain the responses for all the various faults.

TIME PLOTS OF HARMONICS

•Add a three-phase RMS voltmeter (Meter page Master library)
between the breaker and fault branch.
•Add this as a meter on the control panel with range 0 to 2.
Adding Sequences
• It is useful when performing an event driven process
instead of time driven processes.
• It can be obtained from the master library and performs
the same task as timed breaker logic and timed fault logic.

EXAMPLE OF SEQUENCES
Creating Page Modules
• These are used in-order to create new component in an
existing component.
• Steps:
Right click Create Component
Component wizard Add ports Name the ports
Finish Drag once the icon on main page.
• The new component design can be viewed in the
Graphics view in page module.
• Inorder to interface the graphics with the circuit components,
Xnodes are used.
• They should have the same name as the graphic view has.
• An Import is needed to bring the data signal from the page
module to the main page.

PAGE MODULE VIEW

Radio Links
• These are used when we want to transfer some data signals from the
page module to the main page.
• A transmitter is connected in the page module and it is received in
the main page through a component called Radio Link.
• It signifies a wireless connection between the modules and they
should carry the same names.
• Here we want to check the resulting fault current in the 3-phase
breaker so a data merge icon is used.
• After using the radio link the graphical view should be as follows
for the considered case.
ASSIGNMENT-III
• Consider the previous case, implement sequences, page
module concept, data merge and radio link to get the responses
of the fault currents.
