BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
On 15 May 2017, the ministry of Health and Family
Welfare-Government of India (MoHFW) reported
three laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika virus
disease in Bapunagar area, Ahmedabad District.
Gujarat, State, India.
This report is important as it describes the first cases
of Zika virus infections and provides evidence on the
circulation of the virus in India.
Therefore we took interest to research on this topic to
create awareness among Indian population.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
characterizing Zika virus infection including
investigating public health and clinical
implications
developing and enhancing laboratory platforms
to support surveillance
piloting new vector control tools
RESEARCH STATEMENT
To prevent an outbreak of Zika virus disease
and containment of spread in case of any
outbreak.
To create awareness on protection from
mosquitos bites among the high risk
population especially pregnant women.
To improvise sexual health education.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Improve counseling of patients about risks during
pregnancy
Inform best practices for the care of pregnant women with
Zika virus infection and their infants
Identify and refer children for services they need as early
as possible
Help agencies prepare to provide services to affected
children and families
Inform policies to allocate resources and services to help
affected children and their families
Improve prevention of Zika virus infection during
pregnancy
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
Zika Virus, Dengue Virus, West Nile Virus and Chikungunya virus
have similar signs and symptoms.
There is no certainty of Zika virus (ZIKV) cases due to lack of
serologic test
Only rtPCR can diagnose ZIKV—that is, only on the first day of
acute infection (still, cross reactions can give a false positive)
rtPCR cannot diagnose infection in infants, infants are diagnosed
clinically- microcephaly
80% of ZIKV cases are unsymptomatic or oligosymptomatic
The area being studied is endemic to the mosquito (A aegypti), which
is a vector for DENV, CHIKV, West Nile Virus, and ZIKV
Coinfection of these viruses is not uncommon
RESEARCH DESIGN
Descriptive case study by using Routine laboratory survillence
through rt-PCR
