CELL ANALOGY

ANALOGY TO A SCHOOL
Cell Wall
 The cell wall provides structure and shape for the
cell
 Analogy: Walls of school
 Only found in plant cells
Cell Membrane
 The Cell Membrane is inside of the cell wall and it controls
what enters and leaves the cell
 Analogy: The doors and the security system of the school
 Found in both plant and animal cells
Cytoplasm
 contains the organelles; “cell jelly” and is a site for
chemical reactions
 Analogy: the air inside the school
 Found in both plant and animal cells
Nucleus
 This organelle has two major functions: it stores
the cell's hereditary material, or DNA, and it coordinates
the cell's activities
 Analogy: Office controls what goes on through the entire
school
 Found in both plant and animal cells
Nucleolus
 This organelle is found inside the nucleus and
creates or copies ribosomes
 Analogy: The copy machines inside of the office
(nucleus)
 Found in both plant and animal cells
Endoplasmic Reticulum
 The ER has materials and proteins that travel
through it
 Analogy: Hallways allow students and staff to
travel
 Found in both plants and animals
Ribosome
 The ribosome produces or creates proteins that are
used for repairing damage or directing chemical
processes. Found all over the cell
 Analogy: Students produce work, projects,
homework
 Found in both plant and animals
Mitochondria
 breaks down FOOD to release energy for use by
the cell
 the boiler and generator of the school
 Found in both plant and animals
Golgi Body
 The Golgi body packages, modifies and sorts materials in
the cell and then ships it to the right place
 Analogy: Secretary does the same thing (sends students
out, dismissal..)
 Found in both plant and animals
Chloroplast
 convert light energy of the Sun into sugars that can be
used by cells.
 Analogy: Solar panels on top of the school that help to
generate power
 Found only in plants
Vacuole
 Vacuole stores water and substances for the cell
 Analogy: Custodians closet stores materials for the building
 Found in both plants and animals but only plants have the
large central vacuole, animal cell vacuole’s are small
Lysosomes
 breaks down large food particles and old or
damaged organelles
 Analogy: The bathrooms and the janitor staff of a
school
 found in all animal cells BUT are very rare in plant
cell
