Filipinos know Graciano Lopez Jaena for his courage in expressing

himself. His application for enrolment at the University of Santo Tomas

was turned down for some reasons. But that did not stop him. He
reapplied at San Juan de Dios where he experienced the practice of
medicine. One time he was asked by the mayor of a nearby town to
make a false certification. He was unhappy with the mayor’s request.
He thought it was illegal and inappropriate. For him, overuse of power
was one flaw of the mayor. The mayor became angry and Graciano was
persecuted. He was forced to leave for Spain. In Spain, he exposed the
injustice of Spanish officials in the Philippines. He became anti-
Spaniards. To stop him, a Spanish bishop offered him good position, but
he opposed. He was forced to leave Spain and went back to the
Philippines where he was put to jail for the false accusation
