• A Way of life of a group of people who share similar


beliefs and customs.

• It includes language, what they do, eat, make,


believe and how they dress.

• These groups are called “Cultural Groups”

Intercultural Communication

• Intercultural communication stretches back into antiquity.


• It all began when people from different cultures started to meet together
and communicate with each other.
• For the proper name of the field "Intercultural Communication" credit is
often given to American anthropologist Edward T. Hall, who used it for the
first time in his book The Silent Language in 1959. The book is sometimes
called "the field's founding document" (Hart 1998). When he began to
explore how people from different cultures can successfully communicate.
Why intercultural communication is important?

Intercultural communication offers the ability


• To deal across cultures,
• To make more and more contact with people who are
culturally different.
• Allow people from different cultures to work together
as a group.
• Being able to deal with this cultural difference
peacefully, never mind creatively and innovatively, is
becoming a survival issue to thrive in a global world
as a global leader
Examples of Intercultural Communication

• Coca-Cola Company once tried to find a phonetic equivalent of their brand to be used in China
and thought of using KeKou-KeLa. But the meaning of the terms made them change their
decision as the direct translation of those words would be “bite the wax tadpole”

• Another can cause problems like the ad of General Motors “Body by Fisher” could be
translated into “Corpse by Fisher” in Flemish language.

• Another example is an advertisement of wine translated into Swiss from English which said
“Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.”
Barriers to intercultural communication

• Anxiety
• Assuming Similarity
• Ethnocentrism
• Stereotype and Prejudice
• Non Verbal Interpretation
• Language
Anxiety

• Feeling nervous
• Focus on nervous feeling rather than totally present in the
communication interaction.
• Affect your ability to communicate your ideas to others
• Example: worry that other people may speak too fast or
use words you don’t understand. Find yourself making
mistakes or saying awkward things
Assuming Similarity

• When you don’t have any information about a culture, it’s


natural to assume there are no differences
• Each culture is different and unique to some degree
• For example, cultural differences in showing emotions
• Assuming difference instead of similarity can lead to not
recognizing important things that cultures share in
common.
Ethnocentrism

• William Graham Sumner coined the term ethnocentrism


in 1906
• Ethnocentrism is the view that one's own culture is
better than anyone else's culture. As a practice, it
consists of evaluating other cultures from the
perspective of one's own.
Stereotype

• Journalist Walter Lippmann introduced the term


“stereotyping” in 1922.
• A stereotype can be defined as a generalization about
some group of people that over simplifies their
cultures.
Stereotypes are widely held beliefs about a group of pe
ople.
• Stereotyping becomes troublesome in communication
when people make assumptions about an individual on
the basis of simplified notions about the group to
which he or she belongs.
Prejudice

• Negative attitude towards a cultural


groups based on little or no experience.
• It is a sort of pre-judgment.
• Stereotypes tell us what a group is like,
prejudice tells how we are likely to feel
about that group.
Non verbal Interpretation

• Use of expression
• Use of touch
• Gestures
• Physical appearances
Language

• Diversified language due to


diversified ethnic groups
