Arithmetic
Sequence
WHAT IS AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE?

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE –
▪is a sequence in which the difference
between any two consecutive terms
is a constant, called common
difference (d).
▪ For each arithmetic sequence, identify
the first term a1, the common
difference d, and the next 3 terms in
the sequence.

▪ 14, 10, 6, 2, -2, ___, ___, ___

How do we determine the general/nth
term (an) of an arithmetic sequence?

▪ Formula:
▪an = a1 + (n – 1) d
▪ where an = the general/nth/missing term
▪ a1 = the first term
▪ d = the common difference
▪ Find the indicated term of the sequence below:
2, 5, 8, 11, … a25
Arithmetic
Means
WHAT IS AN ARITHMETIC MEAN?

ARITHMETIC MEAN / S
- is/are the terms between any two terms in an
arithmetic sequence.

In the arithmetic sequence, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, the

terms 8, 12 and 16 are the arithmetic means
between 4 and 20.
WHAT IS AN ARITHMETIC MEAN?

▪ Arithmetic mean is sometimes called the AVERAGE

between any set of numbers.

▪ In inserting arithmetic means, one must be able to

know the formula in getting the nth term of an
arithmetic sequence.

▪ This time, the COMMON DIFFERENCE is unknown.

EXAMPLE NO. 2

▪ Insert 3 arithmetic means between 18

and 30.

▪ 18, ___, ___, ___, 30

Target

1. recognize arithmetic sequence and

mean
2. display honesty at all times;
3. solve problems involving arithmetic
sequences and means.
Quiz #2
A. Identify what is being described in each of the ff.
statements.

▪ 1. A sequence whose consecutive terms have a common

difference is a/an _______________.
▪ 2. This is the symbol used to represent the first term of a
sequence.
▪ 3. It is a set of numbers in a specific order.
▪ 4. In the sequence 6, 3, 0, -3, -6, ______ is the common
difference.
▪ 5.Identify the next term in the sequence, 5, 12, 19, 26, ____.
B. Find the indicated term for each of the following arithmetic
sequences. Show your complete solutions and enclose your final
answer in a box.

▪ 6 – 8. 14th term a14; 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, …

▪ 9 – 11. 25th term a25; 15, 12, 9, 6, 3, 0, …

C. Insert the indicated number of arithmetic

means between each of the following pairs of
numbers.
12 – 14. Insert 2 arithmetic means between 19 and 31.
19, _____, _____, 31

15 – 17. If the 4th term (a4) of an arithmetic sequence is -15 and the
common difference is 4, find the 12th term (a12)
D. Solve the following problems. Show your complete
solutions and enclose your final answer in a box

▪ 18 – 20. Joan started a new job with an

annual salary of 150, 000.00 in 2007. if she
receives a 12, 000. raise each year, how
much will her annual salary be in 2017?
